Ouray Hotel Serves Up the Best Choices this Thanksgiving!

Celebrate Thanksgiving with us in Southwest Colorado!

thanksgiving turkeyNovember in the San Juans is the perfect time to visit. After all of the rushing about in the Summer and fall months, things have begun to mellow. Some of the restaurants and shops have closed for the season, and winter has begun to show signs of moving in for a few months. It is not yet cold enough for Ice Climbing, but perfect for soaking in the soothing mineral hot springs on a crisp clear evening.

With the holidays looming, this is a perfect time to get away and prepare for the many activities in the weeks to come, and of course, there are some fabulous specials being offered at The Box Canyon Lodge and Hot Springs!

Escape the norm this Thanksgiving! Stay in Ouray, and let us take care of all the details!

Outlaw Restaurant

outlaw logoOpen from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 22, serving a Thanksgiving meal of turkey, ham and primerib with all the traditional trimmings you might expect. Celebrate the holiday in this charming atmosphere surrounded by friends and family and music.

Let the folks at the Outlaw provide you with Thanksgiving dinner in a fun and exciting atmosphere. The oldest restaurant in Ouray, the Outlaw has a distinct feel to it. John Wayne memorabilia decorates almost every surface, and the player piano at the entrance fills the room with an Old West mood of fun and festivity. You will feel as if you have been transported back to simpler times as you enjoy all of the dishes you have come to anticipate on Thanksgiving.

Dinner will be served from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Price is $24.00 per adult, $12.00 per child 12 and under

Cimarron Cafe

Thanksgiving Menu cimarronLocated just nine miles north of Ouray, the Cimarron Cafe, which only opened its doors a few short months ago, has already established itself as a spectacular dining experience. Whether you choose to enjoy your meal in the bar area, with several giant televisions broadcasting a variety of sporting events, or relax in the dining room, with expert servers anticipating your every need.

After eating your fill of the decadent delights on this buffet, a scenic drive back to Ouray and our soothing mineral hot springs is ideal!

This year, General Manager and Head Chef, Roy Perkins will be hosting a Thanksgiving Buffet, featuring all of the traditional dishes! There will be only two seatings for this event, at 1:00pm and at 4:00 pm, so it is important to make your reservations as soon as possible.

Price is $25.00 per adult ad $12.50 for children ages 12 and under. Price includes one non-alcoholic beverage.

Stay at the Box Canyon and recieve a voucher for a complimentary glass of champagne or house wine with your dinner.

Every year, we get up early on Thanksgiving to start the turkey and prepare for a day full of cooking and football. Wouldn't it be nice to have all the fun with none of the work? Celebrate with that special someone, or bring the whole family. We've got you covered! There won't be any dishes to wash, and the table is already set. If you run out of rolls, not to worry! Someone else is standing by, ready to replenish your plate!

Give us a call, and we will make all of the arrangements for you! All you have to do is enjoy.

Once you have enjoyed a fabulous meal, head on back to the Box Canyon, and enjoy some football, or a movie from our extensive video library. Let us take all the pressure off so that you can enjoy the holiday the way it was meant to be.

Between the fabulous food and the majestic beauty of the San Juans, this will be a Thanksgiving to remember.

See You Soon!

Ouray Oktoberfest: A Fall Celebration

Food Fun and Music with the Box Canyon Lodge at Oktoberfest in Ouray, Colorado this Fall

october colorsOctober in the San Juans is a spectacular time of year. As the last of the aspen leaves fall, the folk in town begin to prepare for winter and the first snows. To celebrate another succesful season, and usher in the restful winter months, Oktoberfest, with music, dancing, fabulous food and beverages, is a long tradition bringing together old friends, and creating new ones every year.

This year is going to be even more exciting with a fireworks display at the end of the evening!

ouray fireworks 2The city of Ouray still has some left over fireworks from the Fourth of July, which, as you may remember, had been cancelled due to the dry weather. Well, thankfully, we have had some much needed moisture, and now we get to enjoy another spectacular light show. Nothing really compares to fireworks in Ouray. Personally, I am hoping for at least a bit of snow on the peaks, because the reflection on snowy mountain peaks, followed by the booming echo as each firework explodes as absolutely amazing!

Wear your lederhosen or dirndl to participate in a costume contest, as you polka the night away and enjoy a wide variety of traditional German dishes, while sampling microbrews from one of our local breweries.

oktoberfest jeepDoor prizes from many shops and restaurants in the area are given away throughout the evening, with the drawing for a brand new Jeep Wrangler as the grand finale of the celebration. Every year for the past 48 years, the Ouray Chamber and Resort Association raffles off a brand new jeep, selling tickets all season long, then presenting the keys to the winner on the eve of Oktoberfest. This year, you can see the orange Jeep Wrangler parked in different places on Main Street. Raffle tickets are only $5.00 for one, three for $10.00, or seven for $20.00. The proceeds of the raffle are used toward the beautification and maintenance of the City of Ouray, as well as the purchase of next years jeep.

Drive the Million Dollar Highway for an easy beautiful scenic drive through a photographers paradise of fall foliage. Or, hike one of the many trails accessible in town for a more close up experience. Kids Climbing College returns to Ouray Ice Park in Ouray, Colorado!

The Ouray Ice Park opens for the 2012 season on December 17th.

iceclimber5.0For close to 30 years, Ouray has been one of the best kept secrets for ideal ice climbing conditions. In 1992, when Eric Jacobsen, who had purchased some property in a bankruptcy auction made arrangements with Ouray County to lease the land for recreational purposes. The amount of the lease? $1.00 per year, with an insurance umbrella which would allow the public free use of this area.
In the fall of 1994, Bill Whitt, Gary Wild and Mike O'Donnell, using garden hoses and other household items, created the first farmed climbs in the Uncompahgre Gorge.
The next couple of years, Ice climbing enthusiasts began to flow into the sleepy winter town to try out the park. By 1997, Ouray Ice Park Inc was created to better organize the number of volunteers and materials needed to develop the Ouray Ice Park into the world famous climbing venue it is today.
With climbs ranging from extreme for the most seasoned climber, to the Kids Wall, a specially developed 40 foot high, 140 foot wide slab of ice specifically designed for training children ages 8 to 88 it is hard to believe that all of this was made possible by the generosity of so many volunteers!

Natural Hot Springs in Southwest Colorado

box canyon lodge hot springsRevered throughout history for their soothing powers, hot springs have been popular and sought out all over the world. Europe and Asia created huge bath houses dedicated to the therapeutic effects of natural spring water, and legend states the Native American people of North and South America have always deemed the land surrounding hot springs as sacred ground and avidly maintained a truce of peace while visiting the many pools across the west. Upon the arrival of settlers in southwest Colorado, perhaps the Ute Indians found some level of camaraderie through the soothing waters known and respected by both peoples.

Southwest Colorado boasts many towns and spas with natural mineral hot springs, but Ouray has the added good fortune to possess hot springs with very low sulfur content; soakers can enjoy the soothing heat of water full of minerals such as magnesium and calcium, without the distinctive odor of sulfur. Common to almost every mineral hot spring is a high content of sodium, which may explain the lightness so many bathers comment on when enjoying this natural wonder.

redwood tub terraced on mountainsideBubbling to the surface at temperatures from 140 to 180 degrees, Ouray does have to cool its water to make it safe for bathing. The Box Canyon Lodge provides four redwood tubs tiered on the hillside in our courtyard for guests to enjoy the peace and beauty of the San Juans while soaking in a more private, natural setting. The temperature of our mineral hot spring water is maintained between 101 to 108 degrees varying by a couple of degrees from tub to tub.

The City Pool at the north end of town contains over one million gallons of mineral hot spring water ranging in temperature from a cool 82 degrees to a balmy 104. There is a section set apart for swimming laps and a large water slide. The Swim Shop offers everything from water toys for sale or rent to bathing suits just in case you forgot yours, to snacks. Upstairs, the newly renovated gym provides a fantastic view of the pool below as you work up a healthy sweat prior to a soothing soak.

The Wiesbaden is on the east side of Ouray.  This facility has a large soaking pool outdoors;  it also is home of the Lorelei, a small yet private outdoor soaking pool that can be rented by the hour, and the unique vapor cave in the basement of the hotel.

Although there are just a few known sources where the mineral water rises to the surface, evidence of the hot springs flowing beneath Ouray is all over, from steaming drainage grates, to portions of road that never seem to be quite as frozen as the rest of the ground in deep winter. Driving past Ridgway, Colorado, north of Ouray, it is not unusual to experience the sensation of driving through a cloud, as the heat from the springs creates a surreal mist across the highway near Orvis Hot Springs, a bathing suit optional facility well worth visiting if only to view the beautiful grounds and natural setting of the several tubs scattered about the property.

Just 5 miles north of Durango on US Highway 550, Trimble Hot Springs boasts warm water too.  Like Ouray, the water is essentially odorless; it is high in iron and calcium.  Trimble Hot Springs has two geothermal pools that are opened year round and they range in temperature from 101-105 degrees Farenheit.  In April - October, they also open an Olympic-size swimming pool.  Noting its proximity to Mesa Verde National Park (less than 1 hour away), it seems likely the ancient puebloans may have soaked in these waters too.

Pagosa Springs too has natural hot springs. The water in Pagosa has the traditional odor of sulphur.  There are three separate facilities that cater to the public and all are in downtown Pagosa.  Healing Waters (formally known as The Spa at Pagosa Springs), the Overlook, and the Springs Resort
