Ouray Colorado boasts a variety of neighbors!

Life in Southwest Colorado is a little different than a lot of the world.

faith.sheepIf you even have a commute it might only be a few minutes, but often includes traffic jams of Big Horn Sheep coming down from higher elevations to lick the salt off the roads. These beautiful animals are avid climbers, if one or two are on Highway 550, look up and you can pick out several more sheep of varying sizes perched on the rocks and outcrops above the road. You can tell the difference between males and females by the size and shape of their horns. Male Big Horn Sheep have larger horns with bigger curls whereas females have smaller horns with not much of a curl.

elk2Another sight you will see on a scenic drive are deer and elk covering the fields. They come down to lower elevations during the colder months for food. Elk are stately creatures that graze in open fields. One of the largest species of deer in the world, elk are easy to distinguish from their relatives, the mule deer. Elk seldom come to town any more, and are seen most frequently in the spring as they head for higher altitudes on their annual migration.

faith.deerDeer on the other had are more bold; coming into yards to eat all sorts of yummy greens you might be trying to grow. They love apples that have fallen in the yard in the fall as well. there are several deer who have taken up residence year round here in town. It is not unusual to see a few hanging out at Fellin Park in the evenings, or waiting patiently at a crosswalk on Main Street as they head down toward the Box Canyon Lodge, where they enjoy bedding down in the warm area near the hot springs.

faith.burrowOne of my favorite friendly critters just north of town are the half siblings Belle and Silverjack a sweet pair of donkeys. They love to say hi to anyone who stops to see them. Donkeys have a long history in Ouray County. Having been the primary pack animal used by miners, the area referred to as "Jackass Flats" received its name because this was the retirement home for donkeys who had gone blind from their work in the mines. Of course, Belle and Silverjack have no such history, just a lot of love.

faith.yaksAnother unique thing you will see near town is a herd of Yaks. They are beautiful enormous creatures with tons of shaggy hair. They can weigh anywhere from over 600 pounds to over 1,800 pounds. They are used for meat, milk and for their wool. They mostly live in the Himalayas, but we happen to have a herd of them right here in Ouray. While traveling in Nepal I got to eat lots of yak products such as yak burgers, tak cheese, and we were served muesli with yak milk. I personally think the dairy products taste a lot like goat. Yak is actually the proper name for the male and a female is called a dri, but commonly they have become know as yaks.

faith.marmotMy other favorite locals are the Marmots, also known as Whistle Pigs because of the sharp whistling noise they make. They are a golden brown with the cutest face. They live in holes in the ground or in the rocks. You find them higher up in the mountains. But beware, they like to chew wires on your car. Here is one I made friends with while hiking to Ice Lake.

There are many other beautiful and amazing creatures you may catch a glimpse of while visiting Ouray. From exotic domestic pets, to the occasional lost moose, you never know who you might meet in Ouray!

Santa Delivers to Hotel in Ouray Colorado

A CHRISTMAS TRADITION IN OURAY FOR OVER 80 YEARS!

elks logoThe Ouray Elks Lodge works all year, holding special events, BBQ's and meetings, raising money for the community. The funds these hardy volunteers raise are used to help pay medical expenses for some, scholarships to deserving students, and FUN! Perhaps one of the most touching events is when Santa comes to town. Elk members hold a special potluck dinner a week or so before Christmas, to help out Santa and his elves by stuffing dozens upon dozens of stockings. On Christmas Eve, several members of the club offer their services even further to St. Nick by becoming honorary elves for the evening, driving him to and fro, across Ouray County in whatever weather, to help him deliver gifts and good cheer.

Elks.Santa.3Parents who live in the Community, and families who are visiting, are invited to call these honorary elves with the names and locations of their kids, so Santa can be sure to give them extra special attention.

On December 8, 2012, Santa is scheduled to arrive in Ouray, riding in not his traditional sleigh, but atop a fire truck destined for the Ouray Elks Lodge! Once the parade is over, Santa and Mrs. Claus will head on over to the Elks Lodge, where they will meet with all of the children, gathering any last minute changes to letters sent to the North Pole.  Of course, Santa is a very busy fellow this time of year, but has yet to forget a child. Especially in Ouray!

elks.santa.4With the help of a dedicated staff of volunteers, Santa is able to make his rounds all through Ouray County, visiting children far and wide. Every Christmas Eve, the Ouray Elks Lodge brings smiles and gifts to the children of Ouray County, delivering a stocking filled with treats, and a special gift just for them.

It is always such a pleasure to see the faces of children light up when they discover Santa at their door, especially when they are far from home!  During your visit over Christmas to the Box Canyon Lodge and Hot Springs we invite you to take part in this Ouray Christmas tradition.  Please give us a call at 800-327-5080, or send us an email, letting us know the names, ages, and gender of the children staying with you over Christmas Eve.  We will contact the Ouray Elks Lodge with your information and arrange for Santa to drop by your room and hand out gifts and treats for the children.  You can even arrange to leave gifts here in the lobby that you would like Santa to deliver for you.

If you do not have reservations for this holiday, we still have some availability.  We love having you here!

Fall Foliage Update for October 2012 in Southwest Colorado

Ouray Lodge works to give the most up to date Fall information!

september.2012.fall.colorsOctober is here, and the weather is still holding. The aspen trees are magnificent, even in areas where they have peaked and are now dopping leaves like the snow flakes soon to follow.

Every day, we at the Box Canyon Lodge try to get the most up to date information regarding where the leaves are at their best, and pass that information on to our guests. We also try to take drives ourselves, in order to have first hand knowledge to share with you, not to mention that we enjoy this time of year as well!

It is always a pleasure to hear from guests as they arrive at our doorstep of the fabulous colors the Aspens display. According to some folks who stayed with us earlier this week, the colors up on Owl Creek are pretty awesome on the Ridgway side. Great photo ops await!

september.2012.fall.colors.2The US forest Service is also a great resource, which we definately refer to as well.

The US Forest Service has issued the following status on foliage patterns for the San Juans.

Date: 10/03/12

Estimated Percentage of Current Fall Foliage:

Durango – 45% (90% oakbrush)
Purgatory - 95%
Molas - aspens - past peak
Silverton –  aspens - past peak

Red Mountain Pass - past peak
Dallas Divide / Telluride - 90%

Pagosa / Wolf Creek Pass – 70% East Fork

Rico - 90%
Dolores – 45% (80% oakbrush)
Mancos – 75% (90% oakbrush)

Areas with Greatest Amount of Color / Recommended Viewing Areas:

Purgatory should be still good this week.
Mancos to Transfer is good this weekend.
East Fork of the San Juan North of Pagosa Springs.
A little lower to see color this week, and it is changing fast.  Middle Mountain and Missionary Ridge aspens and oak going fast.

Estimated Peak Viewing Period:

Down from the passes this week will be good but will peak sometime soon.
Other passes/ high elevation aspen groves, currently have some good color but are passed prime.

Viewing Suggestions / Tips:

Plan on driving a bit to find the best spots.  Around 9000 feet in elevation.

Trees That Are Currently Turning Color:

Aspens, grasses and low scrub oak.
Oak turned early and fast this year.  It is good at the lower elevations where many trees have not started yet.

Top Three Scenic Drives in Ouray, Colorado for Passenger Vehicles

Take the back roads in Ouray County and see more in just a short drive!

Often referred to as the Jeeping Capital of the World, Ouray and the surrounding area boast over 500 miles of four wheel drive roads. Each trail is filled with spectacular scenery; a journey into the colorful past that is the Western Slope of Colorado. Abandoned mines, wildflowers, mountain lakes and waterfalls are just a few of the sights awaiting you on any given trail.

scenic drives in a sedan campbird mine road
Although many of these roads require the higher clearance of a four wheel drive, and are more fun if you take a jeep or a tour, there are several county roads off the beaten track that can be travelled in a regular passenger car. These are three of my favorite short drives which are easily accessed and won't damage your vehicle:

River Road (County Road 17) from Ouray to Ridgway

oak street county road 17Drive time: ½ hour to an hour

Ever wonder how people get to the houses you see on the west side of Highway 550 north of Ouray? This road starts in Ouray as Oak Street, and is best to begin at the southwest corner of town near the Box Canyon Lodge & Hot Springs. Travel up over Oak Street and the view of the town below is a spectacular way to begin the journey to Ridgway. Travel along the river for a short distance, the
road curves toward highway 550. At this junction, take the left curve which will take you back and up past the Black Lakes Subdivision, look down on Idlewild and finally into the open ranchland surrounding Ridgway. When you get to the base of the hill, you can either turn right, back to highway 550, or continue the back road all the way into Ridgway, exiting onto Highway 62. The majority of this drive is past private property, but the views are amazing and well worth the drive.

county road 1 ourayCounty Road 1 from Ridgway to Colona

Drive Time: 1 to 2 hours

County Road 1 is perhaps one of the best kept secrets in Ouray County. Accessible by several routes in and around Ridgway Colorado, this road takes you up past the Divide Golf Course, meadows and ranchland, displaying the true diversity of landscape Colorado is famous for.

Perfect for viewing Fall Foliage, try driving County Road 24 first, then just follow the signs to Divide Golf Course. Instead of turning in at the clubhouse, just continue on the main road which will eventually exit onto Highway 550 at Colona. Turn right to head back to Ouray.

chimney rock county road 10Owl Creek Pass to Silver Jack Reservoir (County Road 10)

Drive time: non-stop, about 2 hours, but easily a half day drive

Definitely a favorite for all of the history connected to this road, not to mention the fantastic scenery, County Road 10 can be accessed either off of Highway 550 about 2 miles north of Ridgway, or for the more adventurous, take County road 12 just south of the town of Ridgway's only traffic light, and circle up 12A which exits out onto county road 10. Take a right, and continue your adventure.

Beyond ranches as the road begins to climb, the entire valley is spread before you, it just gets better and better on this drive with the first glimpse of Chimney Rock. Entering the more forested portion of this drive, you can't miss Deb's Meadow, the scene of the famous shootout in the original "True Grit" movie. The road continues on to picnic spots by the river, and Silver Jack reservoir, a beautiful mountain lake. This road actually continues beyond this point, but gets a little rougher, and may not be as much fun in a passenger car.
