Ouray County Wine and Whiskers Carnival is Growing!

Second Chance Humane Society celebrates 6th Annual Wine and Whiskers at Ouray County 4-H Event Center!

second chance logoEvery year, Second Chance Humane Society works to preserve and better the lives of animals all across the Western Slope. Since opening doors in Ridgway in 1194, the Second Chance Humane Society has saved thousands of pets in Ouray and San Miguel Counties. With the support of these two communities, they have been able to move their facilities to a large ranch outside of Ridgway, which offers the space to extend the number of animals they can take in.

As this non-profit organization grows, much through donations and volunteers, still it needs help. With fund raising events throughout the year, awareness of both the success of Second Chance, and its growing needs are made public. Of course, because Second Chance is about finding forever homes, which is a happy event, their fund raising efforts are certainly geared toward the joys of life, which are enhanced by that special dog, cat or hamster in every persons life.

santapawsSanta Paws has been a huge success for the Humane Society, and no less so here in Ouray County. It appears everyone had been missing the chance for their furry family members to tell Santa what they needed for the holidays.

The Second Chance Thrift Shop, located in downtown Ridgway is a huge source of income for the Humane Society, as well as a great place to view photos of the most recent possibilities for new members of your home.

The Wine and Whiskers Gala is somewhat new on the fund raising front, but has also achieved enormous results. Each year, the festivities get bigger and better, and this year, the have gotten so big, Second Chance has decided to spread the fun over two days. This way, everyone will get a chance to enjoy all of the fun there is to be had while serving a great cause!

Every year has been famous for the fashion show, which dominated the entire first part of the evening. This year, the opening night Mixer, Thursday March 14, from 6-8pm, is specifically dedicated to the fashion show. A small silent auction will be held as well, but the focus is on the show. Enjoy an evening of models walking the cat-walk displaying a variety of colorful ensembles straight from the thrift shop and given a whole new life. This is a fashion show not to be missed! Tickets for this event are $20.00 at the door, or $15.00 if purchased early.

winenwhiskersOn Saturday, March 16, put your dancing shoes on, and come with an empty belly! Chefs from all around the area will present a selection of decadent samplers, as revelers participate in a silent auction featuring a variety of local crafts and services, followed by a live auction sure to get you bidding, as well as an encore of the fashion show! But wait! Theres more! Dance the night away to a variety of musical genres presented by DJ Antone. What a fabulous opportunity to dress up and show your support to a great cause! Tickets for the Gala Event are $40.00 in advance, and $45.00 at the door.

So plan your next visit to Ouray around this spectacular event. Spend the weekend relaxing in the mineral hot springs. Go ice climbing, snow shoeing or take a scenic drive during the day, then dress up and head on down to the 4-H Event Center in Ridgway for not just one, but TWO nights of roof raising fun.

Tickets for these events are available at the Second Chance Thrift shop, Buckskin Booksellers, and Telluride Veterinary Clinic. call 970-626-2273 for details.

Wright Opera House Welcomes Jayme Stone to Ouray this February!

Jayme Stone's "Room of Wonders" February 9, 2013 at the Wright Opera House in Southwest Colorado!

Jayme StoneIt is easy to see the resemblance of the original banjo in more modern stringed instruments, each of which has a truly distinctive sound.

Dating back hundreds of years, the first banjo is a prime example of the evolution of modern music. The first record of similar instruments dates back to West Africa, and slowly spread across all of Africa into the Far East and the Middle East as early as the 17th century.

Following the journey of the banjo through the ages and all of the folk music in which the instrument is so prevalent, Jayme Stone has captured the sound in a remarkable way. Stating once in an interview that his music is the kind you learn from people, not from books, Mr. Stone has traveled the path of the banjo, finding his inspiration in every aspect of the folk traditions from Brazil to Norway to his most recent collaboration with singer and kora maestro Mansa Sissoko in West Africa.

banjoThe end result is an auditory feast of music unlike anything you may expect when you hear the word ’banjo’. The two-time Juno Award winning artist will be joining us at the Wright Opera House in Ouray, Colorado this February 9, 2013 for a performance sure to please.
Built in the 1800’s by the Wright family in the hopes of bringing more cultured entertainment to the wild mining town, then falling into disrepair in the late 1980’s, the Friends of the Wright are re establishing the dream, and continue to bring such talented artists as Jayme Stone to perform at the Wright Opera House.

tub.soakingSpend the weekend in Ouray, and let us help you create a perfect escape from the day to day. Then the evening really kick off as you head to the Wright Opera House to enjoy an exciting and fun concert! Ouray Colorado: Best Little Town in the San Juan Mountains

ouray best place to visit in colorado

Ouray Colorado Provides Relaxation Around Every Corner

Ouray, Colorado is a tiny, picturesque Victorian village nestled into a valley surrounded by rugged alpine peaks rising from the very edges of the town. Situated in a river valley at 7,792 ft. in the heart of the Rocky Mountains lies the spectacular mountain town eloquently nicknamed the “Switzerland of America”.

Ouray officially began in 1876 with the eager stroke of the prospector’s pick. However, the future brought with it those simply inspired by its beauty. Because of Ouray’s majestic peaks, cascading waterfalls, natural hot springs, the famous Million Dollar Highway, Ouray Ice Park, and its reputation for being the Jeep Capital of the World, modern visitors flock to Ouray as much for its beauty as the miners of the past did for the riches they hoped to find.

ouray best little town in coloradoIn Ouray, Mother Nature is the star attraction, providing the WOW factor that affects nearly all visitors. Ample facilities, services and commercial district are vibrant because tourism, with a focus on recreation and nature, is the major industry.

The present year-round population of approximately 900 swells considerably in the summer months as thousands of travelers visit this unique valley. Ouray is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise. Whether you set out to conquer the mountains with rope and carabineer, on foot, bike, or four-wheel drive—there’s a route for everyone. Autumn is truly an outstanding time of year, with aspen stands and mixed coniferous forests exhibiting glorious displays of golden colors. The winter months are enchanting and Ouray runs on a slower pace. At night when the lights meet the formations of ice and snow they join in a shimmering dance of magical light.

Although Ouray is tiny (only eight blocks long and eight blocks wide), it is mighty and is the perfect retreat for rest and relaxation regardless of the season. In addition to the area's outdoor opportunities, Ouray has over 50 shops and galleries on its compact Main Street as well as 19 restaurants, 13 hotels and 13 Bed & Breakfasts. Ouray has a vibrant arts and cultural community that provides great entertainment to the area residents and visitors alike.

Ouray businesses are truly small businesses, family owned and operated and created by entrepreneurs that fancy a small town way of life. There are no chains or large corporate interests in Ouray; each independent business sustains a family and other town residents through employment.

Relax in the Hot Springs, and Have a Howling Good Time Supporting the Arts in Southwest Colorado!

fall snow ourayJust because Halloween falls on a week night this year is no reason to stay in. In fact, it just means there are so many more options to celebrate and dress up! Spend a weekend with us at the Box Canyon Lodge and take in some entertainment! Wondering what to do in Ouray over the next few weekends? Well wonder no more! The Wright Opera House and other local venues have a full calendar of entertainment ready for you.

Friday, October 19 and Saturday, October 20, 2012 take a blast into the past with the Rocky Horror Picture Show, starting each evening at 9:30 pm.

The pool is closed you say? Not to worry! Spend the weekend at the Box Canyon Lodge where our tubs are open 365 days a week, and celebrate the season at the presentation of one of the most popular cult classics in history.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show 02Remember those college days, when everyone would dress up as their favorite character from the film (mine was Magenta) and head on down to the late night theatre, props in hand? The Rocky Horror Picture Show is an event which demands audience participation. The sense of camaraderie as you sing along with Brad and Janet and dance the Time Warp is an experience not to be missed. Perhaps the best part of the Rocky Horror Show is that you have the actors on screen, and actors on stage lip syncing the entire show. Not sure what your lines are? Not sure when to throw out which prop? Not to worry! That's what the actors are there for.
rocky.horror.2The film centers around a young couple (Alec Baldwin and Susan Sarandon) who become lost in a storm with a broken down car. Seeing lights on in a castle down the way, they head to the front door for assistance. What follows is an evening bordering on ridiculous as they strive to survive the night and escape the clutches of Dr. Fank-N_Furter (Tim Curry). The film itself is a little silly, and if you are easily offended, perhaps not for you. What makes this such a classic is the great soundtrack and audience participation.

On Saturday, October 20, 2012, after the show, there will be an after hours dance.

Join the stage actors as they celebrate another fantastic performance. Stay on at the Wright Opera House after the show with a cash bar and Dance the Time Warp one more time! Show off your own costumes and share whatever is left in your goodie bag as you party the night away with your fellow moviegoers. This is a great time to meet a number of people in a truly festive setting. It is hard not to feel like you have shared something special with each other after a Rocky Horror Night.

Admission to the Rocky Horror Picture Show is by donation only. The suggested donation is $15.00 per person, which will include a goodie bag full of the props and fun for the show. There is an additional $10.00 per person charge to attend the after hours party on Saturday night. The show begins each evening at 9:30 pm. This is for ages 21 and older only.

war of the worldsSaturday, October 27, 2012, The Ouray County Players present the Staged Radio Show – War of The Worlds”

In 1938, general panic set in as Orson Wells presented an adaptation of the novel by H.G. Welles "The War of the Worlds" as a radio broadcast.

wright opera house logoThe story follows a radio news caster as he is confronted with an alien invasion. With special effect sounds new to the era, and the magic of radio- the show is presented as a series of news broadcasts- we follow reporter Carl Phillips as he updates the world on the state of affairs. Not realizing this was a dramatization, people genuinely believed we were in fact being attacked by aliens.

The Ouray County Players, under the direction of Mike Hockersmith, recreate the terrifying radio broadcast.

The show begins at 7:00 pm at the Wright Opera House, and will run until around 8:30, just in time to head on over to the Beaumont Hotel for their annual Halloween ball!

masks2Saturday, October 27, 2012, The Beaumont Hotel presents it 125th Anniversary Halloween Ball

Have you ever imagined a marvelous masquerade ball, held in one of the most beautiful and historic hotels on the Western Slope? Well, look no further! The Beaumont Hotel is hosting a costume party sure to please.

Built in 1886 as one of the first luxury hotels in southwest Colorado, the Beaumont has a long history of honored guests and ghostly experiences. After several years of disuse, the hotel was restored to its previous state, with special detail to historic accuracy. The Grand Ballroom is precisely that, and a perfect location for an evening of dancing and entertainment.

elks lodge haunted house 2012Wednesday, October 31, 2012 Ouray Elks Lodge Provides an evening of fun for the whole family!

Every year, the Ouray Elks hold a Haunted House extravaganza for kids young and old in Ouray County. This year, bring the kids in their Halloween best and join allthe other ghouls and goblins for dinner, a movie, and a Halloween Maze. The theme this year is based on the blockbuster movie The Hunger Games.

For only $3.00 per person, this event is one not to be missed, with fun for all! The fun begins at 4:30, and ends at 7:30, giving parents plenty of time to get the little ones settled with a babysitter before heading out to yet another Halloween party..........

Wednesday, October 31, 2012 O'Brien's Pub scares up a night of dancing and fun!

For the fifth consecutive year, O'Brien's is the place to be on Halloween. Whether it is a Saturday or a Wednesday, you will have a scary good time with all of your fellow monsters and ghouls, dancing the night away to the talented musical styling of DJ Smith.

box canyon lodge winter in ourayDid you not win at the Beaumont for best costume on Saturday night? No worries! Now is your second chance! Prizes will be presented throughout the evening for most original to most scary costume of the year. And with $2.00 drafts all night, this is sure to be a fun night. Be sure to have your designated driver though, because it gets pretty chilly in October, and no one wants to drink and drive!

Ouray is always a marvelous place to visit, and this time of year particularly so. With the last of the fall leaves blanketing the ground, the high country becomes white with winters first snows. As the area settles into the quieter winter months, it is a perfect time to spend a relaxing getaway. Mid week is perfect for a quiet escape, with few cars to challenge parking and romantic dinners uninterrupted by lines of diners waiting a turn. Soaking in the evening in our mineral hot spring tubs is an experience to be cherished, as the air becomes crisper in the evening, and you are surrounded in a mist of steamy bliss.

Don't miss out on the entertainment either. With so many great attractions, there is no better place to be this Halloween!
