New Local Restaurant Makes Every Meal an Event in Ouray!

Cavallo's Restaurant is fast becoming a local hotspot in Ouray!

mainstreetourayThere are a variety of fabulous dining establishments in Ouray, and at the Box Canyon Lodge & Hot Springs, it is our job to guide our guests to the one most suited to their expectations.

Our job just got a lot easier!

Sid and Kelly Cavallo have truly outdone themselves with their new restaurant which proudly bears their name. Offering breakfast and lunch with a distinct Cajun style, Cavallo's has already filled a niche in Ouray's dining world.

cavallos food.3Located at 630 Main Street on the lower level, the restaurant has been lovingly redecorated in a Classic Garden Theme by Kelly, a perfect compliment to the culinary delights created by Sid. Cajun food has a reputation for being spicy, but not so, insists Chef Sid. The perfect Cajun dish is full of flavor, not spice, and he demonstrates this truth with dishes from traditionally recognized biscuits and gravy to a decadent twist on eggs Benedict.

Lunch is an adventure your taste buds will be ready to repeat with salads and shrimp po'boys just the tip of the iceberg.

cavallos food.2Not only has this town been gifted with a fun new dining option, every dish is prepared from scratch, using local produce as often as possible. A cup of chicory blend coffee freshly roasted by local coffee company Exotic Earth is a great compliment to any breakfast choice. Lunch can't get much better when paired with one of a rotating selection of micro brews provided by local breweries Mr. Grumpy Pants (Ourayle House), Ouray Brewery and Two Rascals.

Open seven days a week from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm, Cavallo's is a definite must during any visit to Ouray.

But Wait! There's More!

cavallosrestaurantThroughout the month of November, and hopefully the entire winter, Cavallo's will be serving dinner and entertainment on select evenings. From movie night, to improvisational jazz guitar, with preset menu options that change every week, there is a whole new reason to visit Ouray this winter!

November 21, 2013, don't miss the Farm to Table Harvest Dinner! A collaboration of ideas between Kat Papenrock from the Ouray Chamber and Resort Association, Kris Dunham from Kristopher's Culinaire, and of course, Sid and Kelly Cavallo, the menu is sure to be a treat

cavallos food.4Tuesday, November 5, 2013  is the first Tuesday Night Dinner! Every week promises a new and exciting preset menu, with vegetarian and gluten free options available as well. But Wait! What would Tuesday Night Dinner Cavallo's style be without  music? Ben Gaude is a Jazz and Blues guitarist from New Orleans who has traveled with several bands in Colorado and New Mexico, guaranteed to be the perfect compliment to a terrific meal!

Friday, November 8, 2013 is the first Friday Night Dinner & a Movie! Thats right, doors open at 6:00 pm, and once all the dinner orders are in, sit back and enjoy a new film every week as you enjoy an excellent meal, local beers and the company of friends old and new.

bcl fallWith so much going on and so many great dining opportunities, it's no wonder Cavallo's has already become so popular.

At the Box Canyon Lodge & Hot Springs, we are always excited to inform our guests of fun and exciting events in Ouray, and it looks like there is definitely a new spot to be this winter!

Come stay and play in Ouray!

Saturday, October 26, 2013 from 9:30 pm to midnight: The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Wright Opera House

rockyhorrorThere is something charming and somehow nostalgic in the continuing popularity of this 1975 cult classic, written by Richard O'Brien, who also happens to play the character Riff Raff in the film.

With live local actors performing on stage in front of the screen, the Rocky Horror is an experience. Follow Brad and Janet on a crazy, scary, and often ridiculous adventure as the try to escape the clutches of the questionably dressed mad scientist Dr. Frank N. Furter.

Dance to the Time Warp, and don't forget your props! You will be singing alonng and shouting out the responses in no time. The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a truly interactive film. You can't rent this one and enjoy it at home, it must be experienced with the energy and enthusiasm of a crowd. After the show, stay on at the Wright to finish of the night dancing and reliving the movie with friends old and new.

The show starts at 10:00pm, but doors open at 9:30pm. Admission is $15.00 per person, or $25.00 for couples. This film does contain adult content, and is not reccomended for children, or those easily offended.

3 Perfect Days in Ouray Colorado During the Summer

There is Always a New Adventure in Ouray, Colorado!

ouray coloradoOften, when planning their first visit to Ouray, people ask what there is to do in such a small mountain town. They wonder how they could fill more than one day with activities for the entire family. Once our guests arrive in Ouray though, the question changes to whether there is availability for an extra day.

With so many things to do, we at the Box Canyon Lodge & Hot Springs are eager to assist with any planning for a spectacular vacation.

Day One:

million dollar highway.2Just getting to Ouray is an adventure, particularly if you approach from the South over Red Mountain Pass. Known as the Million Dollar Highway, the trip from Durango to Ouray traverses three mountain passes, each more breathtaking than the last. Although the map says you are only traveling 76 miles, this scenic drive takes about 2 1/2 hours or longer, depending on how often you decide to stop for pictures.

Gazing at the amazing scenery, it is almost a surprise when you round one more switchback and get your first view of Ouray. The town is set up like a miniature display, and stopping at the scenic overlook, it seems as if you could just reach down and touch the rooftops.

bcl tbsOnce you have checked in to your clean and comfortable room at the Box Canyon, it is time to soak away the road in one of our soothing mineral hot spring tubs. The water temperatures range from 104 to 107 degrees, and once settled into the small cedar tubs, the views are absolutely amazing.

Spend the rest of the afternoon wandering the many gift shops and galleries on Main Street, where you can find any number of original gift ideas, whether for the pet sitter, or yourself. With a large variety of excellent dining options in town, the most difficult decision is which restaurant to try first!

After dinner, head on back to the hotel, and choose a movie from our library of over 400 videos before hopping back into the mineral hot spring tubs for a relaxing evening soak.

Day Two:

ExoticEarthLogo Transparent White BorderGet up early, and enjoy a moring soak as you enjoy a cup of our fresh roasted coffee. The brisk morning air blends with the aroma of our Exotic Earth Coffee, and combined with the early morning quiet, nothing quite compares.

Get your layers on and come down to the lobby to enjoy a light snack while waiting for your next adventure. At around 8:30 am, your tour driver will arrive, and get you situated for a four hour journey deep into the high country. Or, you may prefer to drive yourself, in which case, this is the perfect time to decide on your route andbegin a day of exploring. Known as the Jeep Capital of the World, Ouray has access to ove 500 miles of four wheel drive roads, each taking adventurers on a journey into history.

jeep toursTake a picnic, and enjoy lunch at the summit of Imogene Pass, or above the twin waterfalls of Yankee Boy Basin. If you chose the tour, a picnic at the park by the city pool is a lovely way to spend the afternnon, playing frisbee or flying a kite. Of course, there are a variety of restaurants offering meals for take out and dining in.

In the afternoon, there is plenty of time for a mine tour. Just a short drive outside of town, the Bachelor Syracuse Mine Tour offers both a walking tour and a shorter exploration deep into the once fully operational Bachelor Syracuse Mine. Close your eyes and imagin the fortitude of the miners who once worked these dark caverns day in and day out.

Back to the hotel for a long soak and a leisurely dinner are an excellent way to finish the day.

Day Three:

hiking2After enjoying a morning soak, put on your hiking shoes, and prepare to experience Ouray on foot. A nice short hike, only minutes from our parking lot, is the Box Canyon Park. this is a state park, and animal preserve, so there is a nominal fee to enter, but truly a couple of dollars is well worth it. The shortest trail in the park meanders easily along the side of the Uncompahgre Gorge, depositing visitors at the base of the Box Canyon Waterfall. Words cannot describe, and pictures often leave something to be desired when trying to describe the awe inspired when standing where so many have before you. after the waterfall, take the stairs for a longer hike to the hanging bridge, 200 feet above the canyon, with views to die for.

baby bathtub trailhead portland junctionIf that's not enough, let the front desk staff help you to choose a hiking adventure suited to your personal expectations. From standing at the top of the closest fourteener, Mount Sneffels, to the awe inspiring works of Mother Nature at the Baby Bathtubs, there is something for every one.

In the afternoon, hop in the car and take a scenic drive along Highay 62 and Highway 145 to Telluride. A wonderful way to experience the area is to park in the paid parking garage at Mountain Village, outside of town and take the free gondola ride into town. Wander the streets and enjoy lunch at one of the fine dining establishments in our sister town just 17 miles away.....as the crow flies.

Once back in Ouray, take in a show at the Wright Opera House, or one of the many options for live music in Ouray. Don't miss out on another soak, and finish the evening off relaxing in your room with another video from the front desk.

There are so many options for fun filled days in Ouray, from scenic drives and four wheel drive adventures to shopping Main Street. Horseback riding in the San Juans is an adventure all its own, as your guide takes you on horseback deep into the high country, surrounded by the serenity of land virtually untouched by motorized vehicles.
Let the staff at the Box Canyon Lodge and Hot Springs begin planning the perfect escape for you. From jeep reservations to trail maps to dinner reservations, we are waiting to create an adventure suited to your exact needs!

See You Soon!

Time to get ready for the Beauty of Fall in the San Juan Mountains!

fall boxcanyonEvery year, the question on everyones lips is when will the aspen start to change?

Unlike other places boasting spectacular fall colors, it is a little more difficult to pin point peak colors in Colorado. Just like the weather, which can change at any time, the aspens always seem to surprise us when they begin to change.

At the same time, we know its going to happen in September. Most likely. A lot depends on the weather. If we have an early frost, the trees begin to change earlier. If it gets too cold too quickly and stays cold for too long, the season will be shorter, and vice versa.

Regardless, taking a scenic drive through the San Juans in September is a memorable experience, and a photographers dream.

Typically runs from Thursday before Labor Day through Labor Day. The 4-H Fair & Livestock Show is immediately followed by the CPRA Sanctioned Ouray County Rodeo.

At the Rodeo, booths offering everything from hot dogs and beer to that special piece of memorabilia to commemorate a great weekend are scattered about the fair grounds, as well as fun activities for the kids, and animals every where! Watch the bull riding event, and enjoy the antics of the Rodeo Clowns as they work to keep competitors safe, and the crowds cheering.

Ouray Hiking Trails: Dallas - Corbett Loop

Hiking in Ouray Colorado:  Fantastic Options to Enjoy the Great Outdoors

dallas corbett aspens ouray

The Dallas-Corbett Loop hiking trail just outside of Ouray is a splendid 6.0 mile loop with a 2000 foot elevation change. The first 0.9 miles is a steep section with switchbacks up a red rock face. At the junction of Corbett and Dallas, hikers can choose. Dallas is not as steep and winds through a forest with coniferous trees while Corbett winds its way on the south side of a gorge so it can be hotter. Corbett is steeper and dryer initially but the views are stunning of Corbett and Whitehouse. From Corbett, some waterfalls are viewable in the distance of the Corbett creek and eventually, you end up in the beautiful aspen forest.

The one mile stretch between Corbett and Dallas cross a perfect aspen forest, dotted with occasional spruce trees. The ground is covered with ferns, delpheniums, queen anne's lace and other plants. In places, the foliage obscures the trail somewhat, but the scene is spectacular. This one mile stretch is the best part of the trail and worth it, just to enjoy this section.   In the photo below, the 60 pound puppy is on the trail and the foliage is 3-4 feet high.  It is a quiet trail, even though it is so close to Ouray and provides a wonderful wilderness experience.  A small creek intersects the Dallas Trail just 30 feet past the junction of the Dallas and Corbett Canyon Trails.

The remainder of the hike down the Dallas Trail is enjoyable, through coniferous forests.

hiking in ourayTrail signs dot the intersections with well marked pointers but it is always good to carry a map.  There is a hiking map for all the trails in Ouray County put out by the Ouray Trails Group.  One can purchase them in town on arrival at many locations and they are also available in our lobby.  The trail group also sells them and gladly mails them.  Hiking in Ouray yields over 80 signed and maintained trails stretching hundreds of miles through National Forest and National Wilderness areas.  They are a volunteer group and they do the heavy lifting so that all visitors and residents alike can continue to enjoy the beauty that Ouray has to offer.  Three cheers for the Ouray Trail Group!  and one million thank yous!

Getting There:  The Dallas Trailhead is about 2.4 miles north of Ouray on County Rd 17.  Take US 550 South just past the City Limits.  On the left, there is a bridge crossing the Uncompaghre River.  Cross the bridge and immediately go right (This is County Rd. 17) and continue towards Ridgway for 1/2 mile or so.  The trailhead is on the left.

Of course, after a long hike, a soak in soothing natural hot springs relieves tired muscles and feet.  And, who can resist a meal at one of Ouray's Premier dining establishments to replenish all the spent calories?  Why not enjoy pasta at the Bon Ton or a tasty Cowboy Ribeye at the Outlaw?  Review our dining page for more options.

What is your favorite Hiking Trail in Ouray?  Why do you like it?

Ouray and Ridgway Events in July 2013

From Fireworks to Photography, Ouray and Ridgway are the Place to be This July!

july 4 fireworks ourayThere is no better place to be than Ouray County any time of year, but there is something extra special about the month of July. While temperatures reach triple digits everywhere else, in Ouray, we occasionally rech the upper 80's. Of course, 80* at 7800ft can be pretty hot, but that's no problem, because right outside our door are over 500 miles of four wheel drive roads leading to picnic spots beside waterfalls or even snow!

July and August are exciting also, because this is the time of year so many people visit. You never know who you may run into: an old friend or a traveller from the other side of the world. Folks who met here on the Fourth of July years ago have been known to become life-long friends, returning every chance they get to experience the San Juans again togeher.

fourth of july.jetsThe Fourth of July is an absolute show stopper. With parades, water fights and fireworks, the festive air is contagious. It is impossible not to smile at the waterfights, as teams pummel each other with firehoses, often drenching onlookers in their efforts to win the day.

Wildflower Season In Ouray Colorado - Best Spots for Photographers

Although wildflowers are starting to come out in the Ouray area now, the spectacular scenes with fields of color really don't show their stuff until early July.  As the temperatures warm and the snow melts away, wildflowers begin their ascent up the mountain valley.  Today, dandelions blanket the Magic Carpet between Ouray and Ridgway, a wonderfully beautiful sight, just whetting one's appetite for the season to come.

Some of the best wildflower viewing areas near Ouray are:

Last Dollar Road

Last Dollar Road peaks first in most any year.  Incredible fields of Sunflowers blanket the area.  It is a bit dryer than most of the other wild flower areas in the area, so the season is earlier.  Check out this area in mid to late June for peak sunflowers.

Yankee Boy Basin

No one comes to Ouray without a trip into Yankee Boy Basin.  Although more traveled than most places, the waterfalls and the incredible basin filled with Columbines (the State Flower) make this a not to miss destination.  Columbines blanket the upper basin in late June and by mid-late July, are complemented with a cadre of other wildflowers including delphiniums and Queen Anne's Lace.

Black Bear Pass

Black Bear Pass has beautiful flowers as well and well worth a trip.  The West Side of Black Bear Pass is one way (down only) into Telluride and the drive is trechourous.  Only the most experienced 4x4 drivers should attempt this route in its entirety, but, the East Side has great wild flowers, with plenty of spots with water.  One can even find herds of elephants (Elephant Ear - not shown) in some slightly marshy sections on the east side.  Head up Black Bear starting the third week of July.

Imogene Basin

Imogene Basin is the highest basin in the area so it is the last area to start blooming but it can provide glimpses of Columbines well into August and vast fields of delphiniums.

Near the summit of Imogene Pass, wildflowers thin as the climate changes into an alpine tundra, but, small hardy plants overlook the Million Dollar Highway and Red Mountain and bloom late into August.

Don't have a desire to find the wildflowers on your own?  Then, talk to one of the Jeep Tour Companies in town and hop on for a half day or full day tour.  Mention your desire for a wildflower adventure and they will surely satisfy.  Of course, we are delighted to make your reservations for you.
And, we would love to know when and where you find the best wildflowers in Ouray County!  Leave us a comment with your favorite location.
