Ouray Colorado: Current Status for 4WD and Jeep Trails - 10/15/2012

As the last leaves fall, Southwest Colorado prepares for Winter Activities.

fall snow ourayWe have seen a spectacular season of fall this year, with colors still hanging on for the time being, however the high country has seen some winter storms, and soon will welcome the first snow of the season. Granted, there is no way to truly know when that will happen, and until then, the jeep trails are still open, but it is important to remember the weather can change in a heartbeat.

There have been some temporary closures of the more extreme jeep trails, and the local tour companies are no longer taking groups up, but if you have your own vehicle, we have compiled a list of the jeep road status as provided by Ouray County, San Juan County and San Miguel County. Happy travels, and please be safe!

Each county and all of the jeep tour companies agree to use extreme caution in the high country this time of year. When in doubt, it is always best to turn around and try a lower altitude pass. As the weather changes from rain to snow, road conditions can become icy and slick very quickly. There are still several passes which are regularly used and provide some of the most photographed scenery in the country any time of year.

With the jeep trails beginning to close, this just means we have winter activities to look forward to! There are some amazing hiking trails, scenic drives that do not require 4WD, and ice climbing season is just around the corner! Late October and November are ideal times to visit and enjoy a quiet, relaxing escape as the hurried season comes to a close, and before the busy Holidays begin.

Needless to say, a long soak in the mineral hot springs is a rejuvenating experience in the peaceful atmosphere of the San Juan Mountains.

Ouray is the Place to Play!

Relax in the Hot Springs, and Have a Howling Good Time Supporting the Arts in Southwest Colorado!

fall snow ourayJust because Halloween falls on a week night this year is no reason to stay in. In fact, it just means there are so many more options to celebrate and dress up! Spend a weekend with us at the Box Canyon Lodge and take in some entertainment! Wondering what to do in Ouray over the next few weekends? Well wonder no more! The Wright Opera House and other local venues have a full calendar of entertainment ready for you.

Friday, October 19 and Saturday, October 20, 2012 take a blast into the past with the Rocky Horror Picture Show, starting each evening at 9:30 pm.

The pool is closed you say? Not to worry! Spend the weekend at the Box Canyon Lodge where our tubs are open 365 days a week, and celebrate the season at the presentation of one of the most popular cult classics in history.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show 02Remember those college days, when everyone would dress up as their favorite character from the film (mine was Magenta) and head on down to the late night theatre, props in hand? The Rocky Horror Picture Show is an event which demands audience participation. The sense of camaraderie as you sing along with Brad and Janet and dance the Time Warp is an experience not to be missed. Perhaps the best part of the Rocky Horror Show is that you have the actors on screen, and actors on stage lip syncing the entire show. Not sure what your lines are? Not sure when to throw out which prop? Not to worry! That's what the actors are there for.
rocky.horror.2The film centers around a young couple (Alec Baldwin and Susan Sarandon) who become lost in a storm with a broken down car. Seeing lights on in a castle down the way, they head to the front door for assistance. What follows is an evening bordering on ridiculous as they strive to survive the night and escape the clutches of Dr. Fank-N_Furter (Tim Curry). The film itself is a little silly, and if you are easily offended, perhaps not for you. What makes this such a classic is the great soundtrack and audience participation.

On Saturday, October 20, 2012, after the show, there will be an after hours dance.

Join the stage actors as they celebrate another fantastic performance. Stay on at the Wright Opera House after the show with a cash bar and Dance the Time Warp one more time! Show off your own costumes and share whatever is left in your goodie bag as you party the night away with your fellow moviegoers. This is a great time to meet a number of people in a truly festive setting. It is hard not to feel like you have shared something special with each other after a Rocky Horror Night.

Admission to the Rocky Horror Picture Show is by donation only. The suggested donation is $15.00 per person, which will include a goodie bag full of the props and fun for the show. There is an additional $10.00 per person charge to attend the after hours party on Saturday night. The show begins each evening at 9:30 pm. This is for ages 21 and older only.

war of the worldsSaturday, October 27, 2012, The Ouray County Players present the Staged Radio Show – War of The Worlds”

In 1938, general panic set in as Orson Wells presented an adaptation of the novel by H.G. Welles "The War of the Worlds" as a radio broadcast.

wright opera house logoThe story follows a radio news caster as he is confronted with an alien invasion. With special effect sounds new to the era, and the magic of radio- the show is presented as a series of news broadcasts- we follow reporter Carl Phillips as he updates the world on the state of affairs. Not realizing this was a dramatization, people genuinely believed we were in fact being attacked by aliens.

The Ouray County Players, under the direction of Mike Hockersmith, recreate the terrifying radio broadcast.

The show begins at 7:00 pm at the Wright Opera House, and will run until around 8:30, just in time to head on over to the Beaumont Hotel for their annual Halloween ball!

Prizes will be presented throughout the evening for most original to most scary costume of the year. And with $2.00 drafts all night, this is sure to be a fun night. Ouray is always a marvelous place to visit, and this time of year particularly so. With the last of the fall leaves blanketing the ground, the high country becomes white with winters first snows. As the area settles into the quieter winter months, it is a perfect time to spend a relaxing getaway. Mid week is perfect for a quiet escape, with few cars to challenge parking and romantic dinners uninterrupted by lines of diners waiting a turn. Soaking in the evening in our mineral hot spring tubs is an experience to be cherished, as the air becomes crisper in the evening, and you are surrounded in a mist of steamy bliss.

Don't miss out on the entertainment either. With so many great attractions, there is no better place to be this Halloween!

Fall Foliage Update for October 2012 in Southwest Colorado

Ouray Lodge works to give the most up to date Fall information!

september.2012.fall.colorsOctober is here, and the weather is still holding. The aspen trees are magnificent, even in areas where they have peaked and are now dopping leaves like the snow flakes soon to follow.

Every day, we at the Box Canyon Lodge try to get the most up to date information regarding where the leaves are at their best, and pass that information on to our guests. We also try to take drives ourselves, in order to have first hand knowledge to share with you, not to mention that we enjoy this time of year as well!

It is always a pleasure to hear from guests as they arrive at our doorstep of the fabulous colors the Aspens display. According to some folks who stayed with us earlier this week, the colors up on Owl Creek are pretty awesome on the Ridgway side. Great photo ops await!

Wright Opera house Welcome David Baker & Friends to Ouray

Concert in the San Juans Draws Fun and Funds to Historic Venue!

david.bakerThe next David Baker & Friends Concert is scheduled for Saturday, October 13. Baker, a favorite local singer/songwriter, has again gathered his talented musical friends to create an evening of fun and heartfelt tunes, both original and familiar. It will also be a major fund raising event for the Wright Opera House, with costs underwritten by Mick and Kathy Graff. This will be the fifth time Baker, a favorite local singer/songwriter, has gathered his talented musical friends to create an evening of fun and heartfelt tunes, both original and familiar.

Baker typically gathers a variety of top notch performers from around the region and creates a polished production with sometimes surprisingly integrated genres, hence the title, "David Baker & Friends." This production will showcase about 25 performers including violinist Debra TenNapel, concertmaster with the Valley Symphony Orchestra, the eight-member vocal group, Dolce Voce, drum and percussion stars, Ken Crombie and Kevin Vernon; and Jordan Carl on keyboard and sax. Mike Gwinn and the North Fork Flyers will back up Baker and the other musicians. They will all be joined by budding young musicians from Ouray School. Baker is pleased with the 2012 version. "It's shaping up to be a truly special mix of many of the finest area musicians playing some of their own tunes, as well as lots of collaboration on everything from folk to funk, heartfelt to hilarious, solo to sing-a-long."

DB Poster 225x300Baker is best known in the area for his original songs, but is known nationally for his songwriting and scoring for PBS Kids and the Disney Channel.

The production is a major fall fund raiser for the Friends of the Wright Opera House in the Campaign to Restore the Wright Opera House. Tickets are $20 with other donations being accepted during the evening. The production costs are being underwritten by Mick and Kathy Graff which will enable revenue from the evening to go directly to the fund to restore the historic building.

Before the concert, there are so many things to do and see in Ouray. The Fall colors are beginning to fade, but this is still prime time to visit and take a scenic drive or hike the Perimeter Trail. Shops are stocking up with original gift ideas for the upcoming holidays, which are really not so far away. A long soak in the hot springs before heading up to your room and getting ready for an early dinner before the show starts is a great way to relax before the toe tapping fun to come.
