December 9, 10 and 11, 2011, celebrate the season with Ourays own unique version of Yule Fest.
Originally celebrated on the longest night of the year, the traditional lighting of the Yule log was begun to light the night sky. Now, we light the Christmas tree, and decorate our shops and homes with bright lights to keep the long dark nights of winter aglow.
From fabulous arts and crafts at the Painting Marmot, to gift baskets filled with specialty items for the kitchen at Kristopher’s Culinaire; gourmet chocolates from Mouse’s Chocolates, or hand blown ornaments from Ouray Glassworks, just to name a few, the shops in Ouray provide a plethora of original and beautiful gift ideas. As you wander up and down Main Street to peruse the array of holiday finds, keep your eyes peeled for the special hidden ornaments in participating shops as part of the Ouray Scavenger Hunt. Turn in a list of at least ten ornament locations to the Ouray Visitor’s Center to enter a drawing for a gift certificate to the shop or restaurant of your choice.
Yule Fest begins in earnest this weekend, with a Christmas Jazz Concert at the Wright Opera House on Friday, December 9, 2011 at 7:30 pm. Enjoy the original sound of Mike Gwinn and the North Fork Flyers, a combination of jazz, rock, and pop, dominated by bluegrass and country , creating a performance everyone will love.
Saturday morning, December 10, 2011, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, take the whole family to the Ouray Community Center to decorate your own gingerbread house, sponsored by Weehawken and Voyager. If you can’t make it on Saturday morning, have no fear! From 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm on Sunday, December 11, 2011 head down to Weehawken Ridgway to create your special memory. Register early at 970-318-0150, or www.weehawkenarts.org.
Once you have finished creating the perfect holiday gingerbread house, hurry to Main Street to welcome Santa to Ouray in the Annual Holiday Parade.
Santa will be busy on Saturday, meeting with kids and pets of all ages at the Wright Opera House from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm as Santa Paws visits Ouray, sponsored by the Second Chance Humane Society.
After a short break for cookies and milk, Santa will head over to the Ouray Elks Lodge at 4:00 pm to visit with more children and families as they enjoy sing along caroling, dinner and a live Nativity Scene.
Local Galleries will be open December 10, 2011 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, for you to stroll through and enjoy the creative talents of so many local artists for the Ouray Art Walk.
From 7:00 to 10:00 pm on Saturday, December 10, don’t forget to indulge at the Wine Chocolate and Cheese Fest, a benefit for Art Partners of Ouray, Montrose and Delta, a fantastic sampling of local wines, chocolates and cheeses with live music performed by Chameleon Ensemble.
Finally, celebrate the holiday season with a concert at the Ouray County 4-H Event Center on Sunday, December 11, 2011 at 7:00 pm. The Ouray County Chorus will be performing their annual Christmas Concert for a lovely evening of music and cheer.
