For the past few days, all of Colorado has been enjoying healthy snowfall. CDOT has been working non-stop, maintaining our roads, and providing access to a variety of winter activities.
The Ouray Ice Park is easily preparing for the Annual Ice Fest at the end of December, but the number of outdoor experiences to be had are limitless in the winter wonderland we call home.
Cross country ski trails beckon, offering miles of serene landscapes to explore. Snow shoeing is yet another means to the back country, allowing adventurers access to a world not many get to experience...
From humble beginnings to its current status, the Ouray Ice Parkwelcomes everyone to explore and enjoy the sport if ice climbing. Once, just a couple of friends took a hose, creating the first climb in the park, which now boasts over 200 manmade ice and mixed climbs, 14 distinct climbing areas, and three miles of vertical terrain.
What better way to celebrate the New Year than a peaceful cross country ski in Ouray County?
Top of The Pines is exactly what the name implies. Dramatic views of the mountains surround the tracks, with gentle hills and seemingly endless fields of snow.
The sport of Ski Joring is gaining popularity as a high adrenaline winter sport which involves a cowboy, a horse, and a skier. Racers and riders alike depend on the speed and capability of their entire team, as the horse races an obstacle course through the snow, pulling an expert skier who is gathering points as he navigates jums and challenges at high speed. The rider is taxed as he guides his mount in sometimes treacherous conditions to greater speed, while at the same time ensuring the safety of the hitchhiker on skis behind them.

Opening a week earlier than last year, the ice is holding strong on the cliffs of the Uncompaghre River Gorge. Climbers from all over the world have been awaiting this day for months, preparing and training over the off season to come climb in beautiful Ouray, Colorado.
This weekend looks to be the beginning of an excellent season for climbers. Not only are conditions looking fantastic for climbing, there are a number of classes and activities planned in the weeks before Ice Fest!
The holiday season is bright in Ouray County this year. The town tree lights up the corner of Main Street and 7th, in front of Colorado West Jeep Tours, joyfully decorated and complimenting the festive lights all along Main Street in the evening.
Early November was unbelievably warm. It almost felt as if Fall would never end, which no one really complained about. The days were warm and invited all to explore another hill or trail, which might not have been so inviting in other circumstances. However, there is always that voice in the back of our heads, wondering where the snow is....
