Ouray, Colorado Sledding: Vinegar Hill

sledding in ouray is wonderful free thing to doYears ago, at the birth of a flourishing hard rock mining community, the settlers of Ouray, CO retired for the winter with no idea of what a harsh mistress Mother Nature could be in the Uncompahgre River Valley.  Early snows cut the budding town off from travel, and food stores became more and more sparse. As Christmas approached, the town found itself in dire circumstances. Many would have given up, hoarded what they had, and given nary a thought to their neighbors.

The folk of this new town were a hardier, more generous group of individuals. Rather than giving up, each member of the community emptied their meager stores and created a feast. Perhaps not what we might consider to be a feast today, but when faced with starvation, this Christmas dinner was truly decadent: beans, a pound of bacon, and flour to make flatbread.

After having gorged to their hearts content, the men decided to continue the revelry with a grand Christmas sledding party. Of course, there was no wine or beer or any other spirits to warm them as they careened through deep snow on the steepest hill in town. Yet again, these industrious men were undaunted, and in lieu of alcoholic beverages, someone broke out a bottle of vinegar, pouring a healthy dose to each member of this sledding party to warm and invigorate them, and christening Vinegar Hill with its name and role to this very day.

The years have gone by, the town has changed, but several things remain the same. The Million Dollar Highway brings visitors to town year round, the scenic vistas around Ouray rank among the best in the state of Colorado, and in the winter, sledding on Vinegar Hill remains one of the best free things to do during the winter in Colorado.

The spirit of the people of this small mountain town maintains many similarities with the settlers of the past.  Winters cool breath does not frighten them and they love the active outdoor adventures, including sledding. In Ouray, there is still a sense of community, and love of this beautiful area, and wonderful Vinegar Hill.  Once the snow blossoms in this tiny Box canyon, bales of straw block the bottom of the hill. Children of all ages still careen down the snowy path, but hot cocoa in thermoses has replaced a glass of vinegar to warm cold fingers and toes.

This winter has been warmer than others but many sledding opportunities abound near Ouray and make great things to do over Spring Break.  Afterwards, enjoy a soak in our Ouray hot springs or enjoy the million gallon Ouray Hot Springs Pool (we sell 1/2 price passes to the Ouray Hot Springs Pool if you stay with us)!

2012-2013 Ouray Ice Climbing Season is About to Begin!

The Ouray Ice Park Prepares for the Best Year of Ice Climbing to Date!

ice fest1December 15, 2012 is the projected opening day for the Ice Park this year, and, as always, we wait with baited breath as the ice farmers groom the canyon walls for a season of climbing in the spectacular Uncompahgre Gorge in Ouray, Colorado, home to one of the largest man-made ice parks in the world. Mother Nature at times plays with us a little, giving us these gorgeous 60*F days in early December, and creating concerns that perhaps there will not be enough ice to open on time, but the weatherman has promised a change in temperature, and snow by Christmas, so those of us at the Box Canyon Lodge at least anticipate a great season for climbers.

MtAbramsNestled at the base of the Uncompahgres in Southwest Colorado, Ouray County boasts some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. With the first glimpse of the town as guests descend from the breath taking drive over the Million Dollar Highway from Durango, the nick-name Switzerland of America no longer sounds as arrogant. Snow covered peaks, and steaming mineral hot springs without even a hint of sulfur add to the appeal of this tiny mining town, filled with Victorian architecture standing proud and untouched since the birth of Ouray.

iceclimber4As if the opportunities for a variety of winter sports in the area were not enough, Ouray is ranked as one of the most popular locations in the world for ice climbing. Not only do the surrounding mountains provide numerous spectacular ice-climbing routes, Ouray has the first ice-climbing park in the U.S. where a mile of farmed ice is available only a two-block walk from the Box Canyon Lodge & Hot Springs and free to all who enjoy this unique sport. This year, a 25 foot overhanging steel tower has been erected on top of the Dizzy prow. Not only will this add to the elite mixed climbing comp route at Ice Fest, and the Hari Berger Speed Climbing Comp this year, spectators will have an unparalleled view of each complex move.

Friends of the Wright and the Ouray County Performing Arts Guild Bring Superb Jazz to Ouray!

jazzFamed drummer Bob Levey is coming to town for a big concert on December 29 and advance tickets are now available, just in time to be wrapped up as a special Christmas gift for music fans, or to plan a festive evening with friends during the holiday week.

After a highly successful music career in L.A., Bob Levey formed this “California Cool” band in Colorado, circa 2005.  That action arose through the “intervention of a higher power.”  Bob had put his music career on pause to nurture his family and develop a business near Aspen.  Now this bandleader and drummer is back with an unflinching commitment to “the music.”  Levey grew up in the music world and had a jazz legend as a lifelong mentor.  His hero-father, Stan Levey,  pioneered modern jazz with the all-time greats of the genre—Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie “Bird” Parker, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and others of the era. After a highly successful music career in California, Levey relocated to Colorado where he developed a business and eventually formed The Intervention Band with other musicians in the Aspen area.

InterventionIntervention’s music is not what some might expect from bebop.  You will be captivated by a hip and melodic stream of superb improvisation.  The versatile Tim Fox plays an engagingly mellow trumpet and doubles with great piano chops.  Also performing will be Josefina Mendez, adding an Argentinean flair to vocals, and Jeremy Fleisher on guitar for some Brazilian flavor.  Tom Paxton rounds out the group on bass. Be ready for an evening of memorable music entertainment!

InterventionTickets ($15) can be purchased online at www.TheWrightOperaHouse.org or at the Wright Box Office inside The Blue Pear at the Wright. Tickets are also available by calling 970-325-4399 where reservations for tables to accommodate groups can also be made, as well as individuals who prefer cabaret style table seating.

wright opera house logo“We greatly appreciate the generous donors who are underwriting the Wrighteous Jazz concerts.  They are making it possible for the Friends of the Wright and the Ouray County Performing Arts Guild to bring superb jazz to the musical menu in Ouray County,” noted Dee Williams, Chair of FWOH.  Underwriters of the series include Larry and Carol Brecker, John Meltzer and Susie Jones, Mountain Market, and Box Canyon Lodge.

ocpag logoAccording to OCPAG Chair, Sue Hillhouse, “This collaborative effort by our two organizations has been a real winner for both.  The OCPAG mission is to bring fine musicians to the area and the Opera House is a perfect venue for jazz.  We could not do it, however, without the private support of the sponsors, as well as the volunteers Jorg Angehrn and Anthony Gegauff, who created the superb roster of performers. This has been a great gift to the jazz lovers of Ouray County.”
