A non-profit organization working with Ouray County Youth since 1992, The Mt Sneffels Education foundation provides academic artisitic and cultural projects for the youth of Ouray and Ridgway. trips to the Natural History Museum in Denver, Choral workshops and books for the Summer reading Program are just a tiny sample of the many projects sponsored by the foundation, living up to its mission statement: "To involve the Ouray County Comminity in developing resources to enrich our students lives and to broaden their educational experiences."

Jake Abell Returns to the Wright with Rosencrantz & Gildenstern this Weekend in Ouray!
After directing and receiving a positive response to 'Murder in the Cathedral' at the Wright Opera House in 2012, Jack Abell, a graduate of Ouray High School and current student at Baylor University is returning on March 15 and 16th, 2013 for a staged reading of 'Rosencrantz & Gildenstern are Dead'. "With this next play, I'm looking forward to serving up something different that will hopefully resonate again with audiences," said Abell.
Written by Tom Stoppard, the story of Rosencrantz & Gildenstern tells the tale of Shakespeare's Hamlet from the perspective of two of its most minor characters who, in Shakespeare's play, are enlisted by Hamlet's vicious uncle Claudius in his plans to rid himself of his nephew. "Stoppard adds a different perspective to this, making the action much more confused, ambiguous and downright hilarious," says Abell. "we're lucky to have such a great cast including Tony-nominee Terry Kiser, Mike Hockersmith, Dan Preston and a slew of Ouray's finest thespians."
Jake and crew will run two readings of Rosencrantz & Gildenstern are Dead on March 15th and 16th at the Historic Wright Opera House. Tickets are $10.00 and, consistent with Jake's efforts working with local schools, students are free.
About the Wright Opera House:
Built in 1888 by the Wright Brothers, the Wright Opera House quickly became a focal point for culture and entertainment in Ouray, contrasting with the saloons and brothels offered at the time. Housing everything over the years from a theater, to movies, to an auto mechanic shop, the Wright has evolved over many decades and has served the town in a variety of capacities. Now, in its 125th year, the Wright is once again a cultural and entertainment venue, and is undergoing a restoration such that it can support the performing arts and the region's vibrant economy for generations to come.
About the Author: Josh Gowans is an avid supporter and fan of the arts. His work with the Friends of the Wright Opera House has been invaluable in bringing recognition to this beautiful historic venue. Second Chance Humane Society celebrates 6th Annual Wine and Whiskers at Ouray County 4-H Event Center!
Every year, Second Chance Humane Society works to preserve and better the lives of animals all across the Western Slope. Since opening doors in Ridgway in 1194, the Second Chance Humane Society has saved thousands of pets in Ouray and San Miguel Counties. With the support of these two communities, they have been able to move their facilities to a large ranch outside of Ridgway, which offers the space to extend the number of animals they can take in.
As this non-profit organization grows, much through donations and volunteers, still it needs help. With fund raising events throughout the year, awareness of both the success of Second Chance, and its growing needs are made public. Of course, because Second Chance is about finding forever homes, which is a happy event, their fund raising efforts are certainly geared toward the joys of life, which are enhanced by that special dog, cat or hamster in every persons life.
Santa Paws has been a huge success for the Humane Society, and no less so here in Ouray County. It appears everyone had been missing the chance for their furry family members to tell Santa what they needed for the holidays.
The Second Chance Thrift Shop, located in downtown Ridgway is a huge source of income for the Humane Society, as well as a great place to view photos of the most recent possibilities for new members of your home.
The Wine and Whiskers Gala is somewhat new on the fund raising front, but has also achieved enormous results. Each year, the festivities get bigger and better, and this year, the have gotten so big, Second Chance has decided to spread the fun over two days. This way, everyone will get a chance to enjoy all of the fun there is to be had while serving a great cause!
