Telluride: Just a Short Scenic Drive from Ouray

Enjoy a Day of Fun in Telluride, Just 1 Hour Drive from Ouray

Although Ouray and Telluride are less than 10 miles apart as the crow flies, the practical person takes a scenic drive along the San Juan Skyway over the Dallas Divide and makes it to Telluride in less than one hour.Gondola in Telluride Colorado

While in Telluride, take the free gondola ride that connects the two towns:  Mountain Village and Telluride.  Have a dog with you?  Just make sure you get into the car marked as "pet friendly" and let your playful pooch enjoy the mountain air too!  Want to take your bicycle up the mountain too?  No problem, most cars are equipped with a bicycle transport rack on the outside of the car.  And, the gondola ride is still free!

Midway through the ride, at the apex of route, get off and enjoy a nature center and some mountain top hiking trails and bike trails.  You can also mountain bike your way to the bottom of the mountain.

bcltubsThere are numerous restaurants and stores where you can shop, dine, and hang out.  In Mountain Village, there is a jumping swing and lovely public art.

Come back to Ouray and the Box Canyon Lodge & Hot Springs and enjoy the peaceful respite after a day away, exploring another eclectic Colorado Mountain Town.

Getting There:  Drive US 550 North to Ridgway.  Turn Left onto Colorado Highway 62 up and over the Dallas Divide.  While in route, enjoy the scenic views of the Double RL Ranch and the Sneffels Massif in the background.  Turn Left at Colorado Highway 145 and complete the drive to Telluride along the San Miguel River.

Things to do in Ouray Colorado - Balloon Over the San Juans

Hot Air Ballooning in Ouray County, Colorado

Hot Air Balloon Over Ridgway

Nearly everyday in the summer months, visitors can enjoy a Hot Air Balloon Ride in Ridgway, Colorado.

Check it off the bucket list:  Hot Air Ballooning in SW Colorado.  Ridgway, a mere 10 minute car ride from Ouray, provides a wonderful backdrop to a Hot Air Balloon ride.  Warm shoes and a jacket are needed when you watch them inflate the balloon for an early morning ascension as morning temperatures are cool.  They take off by 7:00 am as the winds are calm at that time of day so it can be a bit chilly.  Once in the air, the sounds are only the voices of the passengers until the roar of the propane burners kick in to raise and lower the balloon to different altitudes.  Surprisingly, the ride is not windy in the least.  The balloon gently floats above Ridgway for a spectacular sight of the San Juan Mountains and Mount Sneffels in the background.  The valley floor, affectionately referred to as the Magic Carpet, provides a beautiful accompaniment to the stunningly beautiful Sneffels Massif.

Hot air balloon rides are available most times of the year with San Juan Balloon Adventures and these make wonderful wedding presents for your friends and family.  The Box Canyon Lodge & Hot Springs offers a special balloon package which we call our "Up Up and Away" special.  We need to book these packages in advance as there is limited space available each day.

Ouray and Ridgway Events in July 2013

From Fireworks to Photography, Ouray and Ridgway are the Place to be This July!

july 4 fireworks ourayThere is no better place to be than Ouray County any time of year, but there is something extra special about the month of July. While temperatures reach triple digits everywhere else, in Ouray, we occasionally rech the upper 80's. Of course, 80* at 7800ft can be pretty hot, but that's no problem, because right outside our door are over 500 miles of four wheel drive roads leading to picnic spots beside waterfalls or even snow!

July and August are exciting also, because this is the time of year so many people visit. You never know who you may run into: an old friend or a traveller from the other side of the world. Folks who met here on the Fourth of July years ago have been known to become life-long friends, returning every chance they get to experience the San Juans again togeher.

fourth of july.jetsThe Fourth of July is an absolute show stopper. With parades, water fights and fireworks, the festive air is contagious. It is impossible not to smile at the waterfights, as teams pummel each other with firehoses, often drenching onlookers in their efforts to win the day.

Original "True Grit" Filmed in Southwest Colorado In and Near Ouray

Last Dollar Road Provides a Stunning Backdrop for Photographers Year Round and Springtime is no Exception.

The Original "True Grit" starring John Wayne was filmed on several locations in Ouray County including the town of Ridgway, in the Ouray County Courthouse, and up on Owl Creek Pass.  However, the Ross Ranch was actually just outside of Ouray County on Last Dollar Road.

In Ridgway head west on Colorado Highway 62 up and over the Dallas Divide and then turn left on Last Dollar Road (marked with a brown Forest Service Sign) about 2 miles west of the summit.  The initial stretches of road (4-5 miles) are easily accessible by a passenger car.

The Ross Ranch is private property, so, it is best to obey the signs, but, it is right alongside the road so pictures are easy.  This building has fallen into further disrepair but, from this angle, it is still recognizable.  The purple lupine flower in early June on Last Dollar Road.

These buildings are right there too.

Just beyond the Ross Ranch, amazing scenic vistas of ranchland as far as the eye can see and the amazing yellow flowers are dandelions.

wide open fields last dollar road

Part of Last Dollar Road is a wonderfully scenic drive with a  passenger car for the first few miles and easily past the Ross Ranch.  If you have a four wheel drive vehicle, you can continue to Telluride on this road, but, if you are in a passenger vehicle, there will be some spots that are not passable.  Last Dollar Road is a fairly easy road for a 4WD enthusiast, however, if the road is wet, it can be trechourous.

If you are lucky, you may even enjoy some wildlife viewing as Elk and Deer are prevalent in the area.

We offer more information on True Grit locations in Ouray Colorado, just let us know how to help you.  If you stay with us, we have created a self guided tour of many locations that we will share.

There are several locations in and around Ouray County that are sure to spark recognition and a sense of the Old West. Not much has changed in these little towns since the days the movie was filed, and it is easy to slip into the past.

Let us arrange a special advwenture centered around exploring the silm site of this classic film! We will take care of all of the details, so all you need to do is show up ready to begin your adventure. Check in at the Box Canyon, then head out to pick up your rental jeep. Enjoy a nice long soak in our mineral hot spring tubs, then settle in for the night to enjoy your True Grit dvd. In the morning, head on out with the coordinates and information for a day exploring, then back to Ouray for dinner at the Outlaw Restaurant. Know as The Pick in 1969, this little saloon was a favorite of the entire cast. Pictures and memorabilia decorate every wall, and if you ask nicely and are very gentle, they may let you hold Juhn Waynes hat!

We can't wait to help you with a fantastic adventure!

Surrounding the 'dancefloor' of softest green are booths offering a variety of beverages and tasty treats.

Non-alcoholic beverages, as well as wine and, we must not forget the Margarita Bike (if you havn'e blended your own margarita by bicycle, you have not lived) will be there to satisfy any craving.

This year, the first concert will be Thursday, June 6, 2013, and the buzz is that this will be a show stopper!

miss emilyThe March Fourth Marching Band (M4 to their fans) is not a marching band in any traditional sense of the word. Combining funky electric base with marching band themed costumes, percussion corps and brass, then tossing in spectacular acrobatics, M4 wins over audiences of all ages at every occasion, and has consistently been named a “festival favorite.” M4 provides the opportunity to come together in joyous union with a band whose mission is to seize the moment, bring communities together, and leave everyone feeling as if the world is a better place.

Sprinkle that with a little jazz sugar and you have a dynamic, fiery lady with a vintage sound that’ll curl your toes.

The second concert at Fellin park this June presents Otis Taylor one of the most compelling artists to emerge in recent years. To call Taylor a cutting edge artist is an understatement. Although his music is based in the blues and folk realm, his meticulously crafted recordings crash the barriers of jazz, rock, funk, Americana and myriad other genres to create a hybrid that Taylor labels “trance blues."

OtisTaylorPhotobyLenIrishScreen Door Porch, whose blend of Americana, Roots Rock and Country Blues is sure to have you dancing in the park. The band’s energetic stage show thrives in a space that houses colorable harmonies, award-winning songwriting, and a diverse bag of acoustic & electric instrumentation.

On June 20, we welcome a group fresh from their most recent tour overseas. Originally from British Columbia, Current Swell has released a total of four albums. Musical influences from reggae, folk, surf and blues genres can be heard throughout their original music.  The band is landing in Ouray after an extensive tour schedule including Australia, the U.K. and Europe.

Digging deep into the roots of American music, The California Honeydrops embrace the traditions of Blues, Gospel, Second Line New Orleans Jazz, and early R&B. With stellar performances of traditional material as well as their own innovative music, The California Honeydrops get people out of their seats and onto the floor, dancing, sweating, and singing along.

California Honeydrops 2With opening set by The Dustbowl Revival, a Venice, California based collective, merging old-school bluegrass, gospel, jug band, swamp blues and 1930's swing, the final free concert in Ouray is sure to be a show stopper on June 27!

With the introduction of this festival of music and fun every Thursday in June, Ouray is even more the place to lay your hat for a day or a week. In the field of dancing frivolity are children and dogs adding to the celebratory atmosphere. If the tasty treats at the park aren't to your liking, not to fear, restaurants on Main Street are open for business offering a variety of culinary delights from pizza to steak and lobster. It is just a quick jaunt to dinner, then back to the park to dance away those calories!

live music ouray bcm3The concert at the park only lasts til about 9:00 pm, perfect for watching the grand finale, then taking the little ones off to sleep with dreams of dancing under the stars surrounded my mountains, then enjoy a soak in the soothing mineral hot spring water at the Box Canyon Lodge & Hot Springs! If you don't have to worry about getting the young ones home, and aren't ready for the night to end at 9:00 pm, never fear! Every Thursday night, the opening act for Mountain Air will cruise on up to O'Brien's Pub & Grill to entertain the crowds well into the night!

Whether you join us for just one or all of these free concerts in the park, we look forward to showing everyone what a treasure Ouray is!

See You Soon!

Wildflower Season In Ouray Colorado - Best Spots for Photographers

Although wildflowers are starting to come out in the Ouray area now, the spectacular scenes with fields of color really don't show their stuff until early July.  As the temperatures warm and the snow melts away, wildflowers begin their ascent up the mountain valley.  Today, dandelions blanket the Magic Carpet between Ouray and Ridgway, a wonderfully beautiful sight, just whetting one's appetite for the season to come.

Some of the best wildflower viewing areas near Ouray are:

Last Dollar Road

Last Dollar Road peaks first in most any year.  Incredible fields of Sunflowers blanket the area.  It is a bit dryer than most of the other wild flower areas in the area, so the season is earlier.  Check out this area in mid to late June for peak sunflowers.

Yankee Boy Basin

No one comes to Ouray without a trip into Yankee Boy Basin.  Although more traveled than most places, the waterfalls and the incredible basin filled with Columbines (the State Flower) make this a not to miss destination.  Columbines blanket the upper basin in late June and by mid-late July, are complemented with a cadre of other wildflowers including delphiniums and Queen Anne's Lace.

Black Bear Pass

Black Bear Pass has beautiful flowers as well and well worth a trip.  The West Side of Black Bear Pass is one way (down only) into Telluride and the drive is trechourous.  Only the most experienced 4x4 drivers should attempt this route in its entirety, but, the East Side has great wild flowers, with plenty of spots with water.  One can even find herds of elephants (Elephant Ear - not shown) in some slightly marshy sections on the east side.  Head up Black Bear starting the third week of July.

Imogene Basin

Imogene Basin is the highest basin in the area so it is the last area to start blooming but it can provide glimpses of Columbines well into August and vast fields of delphiniums.

Near the summit of Imogene Pass, wildflowers thin as the climate changes into an alpine tundra, but, small hardy plants overlook the Million Dollar Highway and Red Mountain and bloom late into August.
