Winter Fun for the Whole Family In Ouray, Colorado!

Years ago, at the birth of a flourishing hard rock mining community, the settlers of Ouray, CO retired for the winter with no idea of what a harsh mistress Mother Nature could be in the Uncompahgre River Valley.  Early snows cut the budding town off from travel, and food stores became more and more sparse. As Christmas approached, the town found itself in dire circumstances. Many would have given up, hoarded what they had, and given nary a thought to their neighbors.

A Colorado Non-Profit Organization (501-c-3), the mission statement of Weehawken Creative Arts is: “to provide high-quality arts education and personal growth programs and events to adults and children year-round.” For twelve years now, they have nurtured the artist in us all, cultivating the abilities of multi-talented artists into a team of instructors whose passion for their art easily transmits to students eager to learn and express themselves. With classes and performances in Ouray, Ridgway and Motrose, this organization consistently fills a much appreciated niche in the county.

From concerts to classes, Ouray County benefits greatly from the tireless efforts of this organisation to bring color and culture to our little corner of the world.

Outdoing themselves yet again, OCPAG is proud to bring the Jordan Carls Quartet for an intimate Jazz Cabaret at the Wright Opera House at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 22.

An Adventure On the Ice in Ouray

Ice climbers from all around the world come to our sleepy town of Ouray every year to brave the extreme temperatures, heights, and vertical climbs of the Ouray Ice Park. Anticipation builds as ice farmers dangle by ropes to prepare every crevasse of the park to ensure safe and desirable ice climbing conditions. Ice farmers fearlessly brush off fresh snow, excavate unwanted ice, and form new ice daily from the many faucets at the top of the gorge.  Since the park has so many variables effecting the ice formations, the official announcement of when the gates will open and close to the public changes each year. This year, thrill seeking enthusiasts received the perfect holiday gift, because the park opened on Christmas Day.
