If you even have a commute it might only be a few minutes, but often includes traffic jams of Big Horn Sheep coming down from higher elevations to lick the salt off the roads. These beautiful animals are avid climbers, if one or two are on Highway 550 , look up and you can pick out several more sheep of varying sizes perched on the rocks and outcrops above the road. You can tell the difference between males and females by the size and shape of their horns. Male Big Horn Sheep have larger horns with bigger curls whereas females have smaller horns with not much of a curl.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) keeps Southwest Colorado safe!

Colorado has enjoyed a genuine snowy winter this year! As we all enjoy the great conditions for a variety of winter activities, the conditions of our roads is always on our minds. What fun would it be to hear about excellent conditions for skiing, ice clibing etc. if there is no safe way to get there?  Never fear! The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and our local organizations work extra hard in the winter to keep our roads cleared every time it snows.

When thinking about Southwest Colorado, the image of a 4x4 traversing high mountain passes, or hardy athletes as they brave the ice in the Uncompahgre Gorge. It is easy at time to overlook the wide variety of agricultural treasures the rich land provides.
For the past seven years, the Wine Chocolate and Cheese Festival has opened our eyes to the variety of amazing goodies right in our back yard! Focusing primarily on wine with a touch of everything else, the Festival is an awesome opportunity to sample a number of healthy, local gift ideas.

Fall is here, and the Colors are Magnificent!
I have done some adventuring in the past few days and it is a definite must to get out there and enjoy the beautiful warm fall days and the amazing splendor of color. Yankee Boy Basin is beautiful! Red Mountain Pass is in full flame of color! Last Dollar Road and Dallas Divide is spectacular! The weather is perfect! The sun is shining! Get out there and enjoy our amazing surroundings!

San Juan Chamber Music Festival Returns to Ouray County

Ouray County Performing Arts Guild (OCPAG) is a non profit organization, bringing quality events in music, dance, theater and other genres to Ouray and Ridgway.

Each year, The San Juan Chamber Music Festival boasts a variety of talented musicians both performing and sharing classical music knowledge. Music lovers can look forward to another year of amazing concerts at this year's San Juan Chamber Music Fest!

High Altitude Living

Ouray now has an Oxygen Bar! Elevate Day Spa has moved to a new beautiful space on 5th Ave and expanded! 

Living at over 7,500 feet we often hear people say that they have a hard time breathing. People visiting from lower altitudes often suffer the effects of altitude sickness, which can display flu like symptoms. Drinking lots of water, staying away from alcohol, and generally taking it easy while you acclimate helps pretty quickly. For extreme cases, often a short drive to Ridgway, (about 1000 feet lower in elevation), can help as well, and of course there is oxygen. The Ouray Alchemist Museum actually carries canned oxygen, which is kind of like an inhaler, and helps many people experiencing the effects of the higher altitudes.
