Back Country Skiing in Southwest Colorado

Posted by Rebecca Doll on Thu, Feb 23, 2017 @02:04 PM

Back country skiing is one of the most rewarding winter activities one can partake in around Ouray during the winter months. Skinning up mountains, catching beautiful sunrises, working hard for your uncrowded, glorious, sometimes untracked turns rewards you with a great feeling of accomplishment. It’s also a lot cheaper than a day pass to any ski resort in Colorado! It’s definitely not for the weary or unenergetic, though. Back country touring takes a lot of patience, wits, and tenacity. After a long and busy summer in Ouray, it’s nice to take a deep breath, relish, and enjoy the slow, easy going moments. What does our little mountain town offer after the kids go back to school and everyone goes home to look back at all their fun-filled photos spent on vacation in southwest Colorado? Cooler temperatures throughout the day means wonderful hiking weather with beautiful sights of snowcapped mountains and golden, rustling leaves. A few of my favorite day hikes are the Perimeter Trail, Sutton Mine Trail, and Blue Lakes – all of which offer amazing views within the San Juan Mountain Range.
