April Showers bring May flowers...and mud season in the San Juan Mountains.
Every year, the residents of Ouray County dread the spring thaw. Not because we so love snow by that time of year, nor is it because we aren't thrilled to see all of the brightly colored wildflowers complimenting seasonal waterfalls that form overnight. Everyone is looking forward to heading up into the high country; hiking and jeeping in the San Juans. What everyone dreads is the mud.
It's a fair trade, and we all know it, yet there are times during mud season that people eventually throw up their hands in resignation. Spring cleaning is postponed until the streets have had an opportunity to dry out a little, hikers are a little taller after a walk in the backcountry, and pretty much every car in the rockies is the same shade of reddish brown.
In recognition of this red-headed step child of a season, Ridgway Area Chamber of Commerce and Ouray Chamber and Resort Association are excited to announce the First Annual Ouray County Mud Fest on Saturday, April 28 from 9:00am to 5:00pm at the Ouray County Fairgrounds.
Activities will encompass all that is muddy; from 4X4 vehicles navigating obstacle courses and racing in the mud, motorcycles performing muddy stunts, and antique tractors pulling in the mud just to name a few. Food and beverages both hot and cold will be available at booths throughout the Fairgrounds, as well as local merchants offering a variety of souvenirs to remember this festive event.
Once the day concludes at 5:00, bring the whole family to the Ouray Community Center from 7:00pm to 10:00pm for the Ouray for the Mud Ball hosted by the Ouray Volunteer Fire Department. Enjoy an evening of music, dancing, activities and games for the kids!
Advance tickets will be available for purchase at local retailers or at the gate the day of the event.
