June in the San Juan Mountains heralds a season of outdoor splendor!

Imogene Ophir7 26 10 295   CopyThe snow is melted, wildflowers are blooming, and the High Country is calling. This year is the first season Ouray has joined the Summer Concert Series, a series of free concerts in the park every Thursday. Ridgway has been hosting concerts each Thursday in July for a couple of years now, and with the addition of Ouray to the line-up, it's just more fun for everyone! Of course, concerts in the park are fabulous, but there is so much to do in Ouray and the surrounding area, they are just the tip of the iceberg! Jeep trails are opening and wildlife is prolific. The wildflowers in Yankee Boy Basin are an incomperable sight, not to mention the eclectic assortment of restaurants and shops where treasure await!

Thursday April 19 - June 30 - Bridal Exhibit at the Ouray Museum

 

Bridal Exhibit, "A sampling of Bridal Gowns 1883-1966," opens and runs through June 30th.

Thursday April 19 - July 5 - Otto Mears Exhibit at the Ouray Museum

Otto Mears Exhibit opens. Most Ouray County residents are familiar with the name Otto Mears. He is most famous for building toll roads and railroads. However, Otto was involved in many other endeavors including founding newspapers, mining investing, military service, Colorado politics, and numerous others. Learn about the career of this famous Colorado entrepreneur. The exhibit closes July 5th and reopens August 17th thru November 19th.

The annual Taste of Ouray celebration features tantalizing and delicious samplings of local cuisine, brews and wine, music and family activities.

Come dance and play at Fellin Park. Halden Wofford and the Hi-Beams with Honey Don't. Local Brew provided by the Ourayle House Brewery, poured by the Ouray Parks & Recreation Committee.

Saturday, June 9, 2012: 9:00 am - 3:00 pm - Corkscrew Gulch Turntable Hike; Ouray County Museum

Meet at the Museum at 9:00 am, and ride up to the start point of this three mile hike on Red Mountain on the right-of-way of the Silverton Railroad from Guston to the turntable. Price is $10.00 per person.

Saturday, June 9, 2012: 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm - Summer Music Series at the Wright: Red Horse

 Monday, June 11, 2012 (All day or non-timed event): Ouray Hot Springs Pool is closed for Cleaning

The Hot Springs Pool will be closed for one day. Water will be drained and the entire pool will be power washed. The Hot Springs Pool is scheduled to reopen on June 12th. Please call ahead to check water conditions - 970-325-7073

An Evening of history with Andrew Guilliford, Professor of History at Fort Lewis College in Durango. Andy will speak on "The Utes in Colorado - The Ute Trail, Ute Peeled Trees & Modern Utes."

Celebrate summer at a free concert in the park! Dance with the Pimps of Joy time with Phoebe Hunt from the Belleville Outfit. Local brew by the Ouray Brewing Co. poured by the Ouray Volunteer Fire Department.

This is the first year for this 10k race, part of the 2012 Race Series, which will begin in Trailtown in Ridgway, Colorado, following a course along County Road 10, or Cow Creek Pass, a beautiful stretch of trail.

Saturday, June 16, 2012: 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm - 1st Annual Wine for Music Town Concert Series Fundraiser at the Ridgway Community Center

A benefit to raise funds for Ridgway’s Summer Concert Series of free concerts in the park this July, enjoy live music with the Jeff Solon Jazz Duo, raffles, wine tasting from a wide array of diverse wine selections, fabulous appetizers to compliment each variety of wine, and a free commemorative wine glass! Tickets are $25.00 per person.

Free ROCC Talk: HISTORY OF THE UTE PEOPLE - Roland McCook will speak about the history of the Ute People. He is a member of the Uncompahgre Band of the Ute Indian Tribe of Uintah and Ouray Reservation, Utah.

Learn about the history of the Revenue Mine, one of the most important Mines in Ouray County. Ouray mining engineer and surveyor Bob Larson will talk about the over 100 year history of the Revenue Mine. 

Wednesday, June 20, 2012: 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm - 101st Army Band -- Dixieland Band Concert at the Wright Opera House

101st Army Band, Dixieland Band aka "The Rough Riders" will play a great program of swing and Dixieland favorites. Admission is free.

This annual event and fundraiser is to benefit local non-profit organizations in Ouray County via grants given in October 2012.

Famous in their own right, the Honey Don't is a duo who is also half of the popular Sweet Sunny South Bluegrass Band.

Friday, June 29, 2012: 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm - Trio Solisti Chamber Music Concert at the Ouray County 4-H Center

Trio Solisti from New York is one of the finest chamber music trios in the country. We are honored to host them in Ouray County for the 10th year. Adult tickets are $20 available at local outlets and $22 at the door.

Saturday, June 30, 2012: 11:00 am - 6:00 pm - Ridgway River Festival at Rollans Park

A FREE watershed celebration. Activities will include a whitewater rodeo, down-river races, the Junk of the Unc race, and fun at the Kid's Eddy. LIVE MUSIC, local food vendors, and a beverage tent will round out the day.
