Friends of the Wright and the Ouray County Performing Arts Guild Bring Superb Jazz to Ouray!
Famed drummer Bob Levey is coming to town for a big concert on December 29 and advance tickets are now available, just in time to be wrapped up as a special Christmas gift for music fans, or to plan a festive evening with friends during the holiday week.
After a highly successful music career in L.A., Bob Levey formed this “California Cool” band in Colorado, circa 2005. That action arose through the “intervention of a higher power.” Bob had put his music career on pause to nurture his family and develop a business near Aspen. Now this bandleader and drummer is back with an unflinching commitment to “the music.” Levey grew up in the music world and had a jazz legend as a lifelong mentor. His hero-father, Stan Levey, pioneered modern jazz with the all-time greats of the genre—Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie “Bird” Parker, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and others of the era. After a highly successful music career in California, Levey relocated to Colorado where he developed a business and eventually formed The Intervention Band with other musicians in the Aspen area.
Intervention’s music is not what some might expect from bebop. You will be captivated by a hip and melodic stream of superb improvisation. The versatile Tim Fox plays an engagingly mellow trumpet and doubles with great piano chops. Also performing will be Josefina Mendez, adding an Argentinean flair to vocals, and Jeremy Fleisher on guitar for some Brazilian flavor. Tom Paxton rounds out the group on bass. Be ready for an evening of memorable music entertainment!
Tickets ($15) can be purchased online at www.TheWrightOperaHouse.org or at the Wright Box Office inside The Blue Pear at the Wright. Tickets are also available by calling 970-325-4399 where reservations for tables to accommodate groups can also be made, as well as individuals who prefer cabaret style table seating.
“We greatly appreciate the generous donors who are underwriting the Wrighteous Jazz concerts. They are making it possible for the Friends of the Wright and the Ouray County Performing Arts Guild to bring superb jazz to the musical menu in Ouray County,” noted Dee Williams, Chair of FWOH. Underwriters of the series include Larry and Carol Brecker, John Meltzer and Susie Jones, Mountain Market, and Box Canyon Lodge.
According to OCPAG Chair, Sue Hillhouse, “This collaborative effort by our two organizations has been a real winner for both. The OCPAG mission is to bring fine musicians to the area and the Opera House is a perfect venue for jazz. We could not do it, however, without the private support of the sponsors, as well as the volunteers Jorg Angehrn and Anthony Gegauff, who created the superb roster of performers. This has been a great gift to the jazz lovers of Ouray County.”
The Box Canyon Lodge is excited to offer a special deal to our guests: Stay and play in Ouray, one night in a King or double queen guestroom, and two tickets to this epic event at the Wright for $120.00 plus tax!
