Million Dollar Highway
The Million Dollar Highway, which was originally constructed to transport ore from Ouray’s prosperous mines, follows U.S. 550 between Ouray and Silverton. It’s a different kind of Colorado gold that flanks the road during the fall as it winds through Uncompaghre Gorge and climbs to the summit of Red Mountain Pass before progressing into the historic mining town of Silverton. Along the way check out the remains of the Idarado Mine, as well as views of Mount Abrams and Bear Creek Falls. There is dispute over the origin of the nickname, “Million Dollar Highway.” Some claim that it comes from the value of the ore-filled dirt that was used to construct it. Others say the name reflects the cost to build just one mile of the road. One thing no one argues about—the views along the route are worth a million bucks!
