Exploring the High Country in Ouray County - The Wildflowers are here!

Wildflowers blanket the mountains and meadows in a rainbow of colors. Blue Columbine, pink Elephants, scarlet Kings Crown, red, orange and yellow Indian Paintbrush, stark white Mouse Ears and brilliant yellow Black Eyed Susans are just a few varieties of flowers smiling at the sun in the high country.

boxcanyonlodge_governorsflowers2.jpgOn a sunny Saturday afternoon, we went in search of wildflowers and cooler temperatures.

boxcanyonlodge_governorsflowers4.jpgTurning onto Camp Bird Road (County Road 361) we traveled about five miles on an easy dirt road before getting to the turn off to Yankee Boy Basin. Having driven that road a few times, we decided to follow the left trail toward Sidney and Governor Basin, a steeply graded road the takes you to some spectacular views above timberline.

boxcanyonlodge_view-1.jpgThe wildflowers are in bloom everywhere, and as we drove up the road, the view below was breathtaking to say the least.

We stopped at the fork to the Virginius Mine and walked around, marveling at the spectacular colors and the rocky teeth of the mountain ridges above us.

boxcanyonlodge_virginius.jpgDown in the valley, just a short drive or walk, was an old abandoned building and shed begging to be explored.

boxcanyonlodge_virginiusmineroad.jpgTrue to the old Colorado saying, "If you don't like the weather, wait 10 minutes or drive 10 miles", the sky began to darken as rain clouds rolled in, and since we had gotten a somewhat late start, the decision was made to head back down to town for dinner, and a delicious craft beer.

2180.jpgWe chose Maggies for a delicious burger, and a Smoky Brown Ale from the Ourayle House next door, which we enjoyed outside while watching the world pass by on Main Street. After dinner, we sauntered back to the Box Canyon Lodge for a soothing soak in the natural hot springs under a blanket of stars.
