Fall Foliage Update, October 2015

Posted by Maria Ziemba on Fri, Oct 09, 2015 @12:49 PM
October is already upon us, and the aspens are still vibrant!
Earlier this week, the closures on Red Mountain Pass were lifted, with an area that is still single lane alternating traffic, but opening the pass to those eager to catch the last bit of color on the Million Dollar Highway.
There was some snow in the high country a couple of days ago, resulting in the closure of a couple of the high mountain four wheel drive passes, but, overall, Mother Nature has been mild thus far, and the majority of trails are still open for adventure.
Every year at this time, we at the Box Canyon Lodge & Hot Springs make it a point to keep the most up to date information on road conditions as well as the Fall colors.

Based on the San Juan National Forest Fall Color Report, as of October 8, 2015:

Date: 10/8/15

Estimated Percentage of Current Fall Foliage:
Durango to Purgatory – 65%
Molas Pass - 85%
Silverton/Red Mtn Pass – past peak
Pagosa – 50% north, 80% south
Dolores to Lizard Head Pass – a bit past peak, still good pockets
Mancos/La Platas – 95% to past peak

Above 9,000 feet - a bit past peak, still good pockets

Areas with Greatest Amount of Color / Recommended Viewing Areas:
Molas Pass/Lime Creek
Lizard Head/Telluride

Missionary Ridge
Buckles Lake south of Pagosa

Estimated Peak Viewing Period:

Elevation below 9,000 feet.
Getting towards peak fast in some places

Viewing Suggestions / Tips:

Higher elevations mostly done for aspen.
Good photos with the snow capped peaks but the rough weather took out lots of leaves.

Trees That Are Currently Turning Color:

Aspens, oak and service berry.

Last Dollar road is absolutely amazing right now, as is all of the area around Dallas Divide on Highway 62. Guests have tole us that Owl Creek and Cow Creek are also amazing scenic drives right now.
