Anticipation is growing for the opening of the Ouray Hot Springs Pool.
Built in 1927, the Ouray Hot Spring Pool has been an attraction for people all over the world eager to experience natural hot springs without the strong odor of sulfur found in other areas. The million gallon pool boasted different soaking areas, as well as a lap section and later a fun obstacle course in addition to the slide, making it a wonderful place for family fun.
In 2012, having noted the pool was beginning to show its age, the City of Ouray began to review recommendations for essential improvements to the Ouray Hot Springs Pool and Fitness Center Facility. In August of 2015, the Ouray City Council adopted and approved the final master plan design for the Ouray Hot Springs Pool. After a majority vote for renovations, the final budget was approved and contracted.
Throughout the winter months, we have been able to watch the work on the Construction Cam, from the initial demolition, to new soaking pools, wider cross ways, a climbing wall, and more exciting changes every day. It is fascinating to be able to see what is happening under the tents. Despite the cold weather, the renovation is still on schedule. A soft opening, with limited hours and capacities, is planned for Memorial Day Weekend.
As crews work feverishly in the final stretch, more detailed information on specifics of soft openings, full openings and grand opening will be released. Be sure to follow the final stages of renovation on the City of Ouray's Facebook page, and blog posts from the Ouray Hot Springs Swimming Pool and Fitness Center.
Guests of the Box Canyon Lodge & Hot Springs can still enjoy a nice soak in one of our four all natural mineral hot spring tubs. Terraced on the hillside in our courtyard, our tubs boast the same water as the big pool, only in a smaller, more intimate setting. Regardless of your hot spring soaking preferences, the mineral water in Ouray is a wonderful way to soak away the stresses of the day.
