This weekend looks to be the beginning of an excellent season for climbers. Not only are conditions looking fantastic for climbing, there are a number of classes and activities planned in the weeks before Ice Fest!
Boasting over 200 man made ice and mixed climbs, 14 distinct climbing areas, and three miles of vertical terrain, the Ouray Ice Park has become a destination for climbers of all skill levels from across the world.
On Saturday, December 17. 2016, be sure to take in the free Avalanche Workshop, presented by the Ouray Mountain Rescue Team and Friends of the San Juans. This workshop is an excellent tool to either review winter safety, or learn something new! The Ouray Mountain Rescue Team is a non-profit organization completely staffed by volunteers, and dedicated to serve the technical rescue and emergency medical service needs of Ouray County and the surrounding mountain communities of southwestern Colorado. All team members maintain a high level of competence in a number of traditional search and rescue disciplines. Team member skills include technical rope rescue (high and low angle), emergency medicine, avalanche, swift water, tracking, search management, and communications. These men and women provide all search and rescue services free of charge, and the only funding for the team is through fund raising, grants, merchandise sales and donations.
The majority of our climbing guides also happen to be members of Search and Rescue, and volunteers of the Ice Park, freely sharing knowledge and skill in a variety of events, workshops and organizations dedicated to safely enjoying this wonderland they call home.
The Ouray Ice Park is completely free to any and all who wish to experience the thrill of ice climbing. The majority of work is done by volunteers, with just a few full time staff members who tirelessly maintain the safety and beauty of the park itself, as well as all of the behind the scenes work that goes into this amazing winter playground. Annual memberships to the ice park are extremely reasonable, considering everything the park does. Ice Park Members get discounts at a number of local shops, restaurants and hotels, discounts on clinics at the Ice Festival, and a complimentary Gear Card for the 2017 Ouray Ice Festival just to name a couple of benefits.
The Box Canyon Lodge & Hot Springs is a supporter of the Ouray Ice Park, and offers Ice Park members a 20% discount on their stay. Not only are we the closest hotel to the park itself, but a nice long soak in one of our all natural hot spring tubs is one of the best ways to loosen muscles and warm your bones after a morning on the ice.
Give us a call, and let the staff at the Box Canyon Lodge help you to plan you escape on the ice today!
