As the colors begin to change, a trip over one of the many four wheel drive roads around Ouray is a definite must!
In the more than twenty years I have lived in the area, I had never actually experienced one of the most famous and difficult trails in the area: Black Bear Pass. That is why, when Greg from San Juan Jeep Tours came by the other day and invited me along, I jumped at the chance.
The North Rim of the Black Canyon - One of the Best Kept Secrets of Southwest Colorado!
Often, I am asked what I would do if I just had a couple of days to explore the area, and the answer is difficult at best. After over 20 years, I am still finding new adventures, and the list of things to do and see grows daily.
Recently, on a rainy spring morning, we went in search of sunshine and a new, interesting hike. We decided to go to the Black Canyon, one of the most awesome places in the area. I had been to the South Rim of the Black Canyon several times, and it is indeed spectacular. I had not, however explored the North Rim, which is a little further from Ouray, and so the decision was made. Every time I visit the Black Canyon, as with so many places in Southwest Colorado, I am amazed at the beauty of Colorado, and its many secret places.
What is 'snow pack' and what does it mean to Ouray and the San Juan Mountains?
Snow Pack refers to the accumulation of snow and ice on the ground in the high mountains. Mainly occuring during the winter months, the amount of snow in the high country directly affects not only our little valley, but many surrounding areas as well. By January, 2016, the San Juan Mountains were at 118%, a significant amount above last years average.

Winter clings to the San Juans as Spring begins to awaken. Little snow showers are interspersed with flashes of green, as the new season struggles to the surface. Shops and restaurants begin the process of cleaning out the taste of Winter, and anticipation is in the air.
