Posted by Maria Ziemba on Wed, Aug 30, 2017 @10:52 AM

Perhaps my favorite four wheel drive road is Corkscrew Pass.  Not too technical, but with plenty of drama, the road encompasses all of the majesty of the San Juans.

Black Bear Pass - Perfect Early Fall Colors

Posted by Maria Ziemba on Fri, Sep 16, 2016 @02:11 PM

As the colors begin to change, a trip over one of the many four wheel drive roads around Ouray is a definite must!

In the more than twenty years I have lived in the area, I had never actually experienced one of the most famous and difficult trails in the area: Black Bear Pass. That is why, when Greg from San Juan Jeep Tours came by the other day and invited me along, I jumped at the chance.

Fall Foliage Update, October 2015

Posted by Maria Ziemba on Fri, Oct 09, 2015 @12:49 PM
October is already upon us, and the aspens are still vibrant!
Earlier this week, the closures on Red Mountain Pass were lifted, with an area that is still single lane alternating traffic, but opening the pass to those eager to catch the last bit of color on the Million Dollar Highway.

Every year at this time, we at the Box Canyon Lodge & Hot Springs make it a point to keep the most up to date information on road conditions as well as the Fall colors.

Million Dollar Highway Perfect for Colors Despite Road Construction

Posted by Maria Ziemba on Fri, Oct 02, 2015 @12:57 PM

The Million Dollar Highway has been lauded in countless articles around the world for its scenery and breath taking twists and turns. Travellers far and wide are humbled by the drastic views and non-existent shoulders. The lack of guard rails may seem like some adrenaline junkies idea of a funny joke, but is in fact more for safety. Guard rails in the winter would result in heavier pileup of snow and black ice, which would make the pass impassable.

With several Projects in progress on Red Mountain Pass, one might think to avoid this scenic byway, but it is still open for travellers at select times.
