After a long and busy summer in Ouray, it’s nice to take a deep breath, relish, and enjoy the slow, easy going moments. What does our little mountain town offer after the kids go back to school and everyone goes home to look back at all their fun-filled photos spent on vacation in southwest Colorado? Cooler temperatures throughout the day means wonderful hiking weather with beautiful sights of snowcapped mountains and golden, rustling leaves. A few of my favorite day hikes are the Perimeter Trail, Sutton Mine Trail, and Blue Lakes – all of which offer amazing views within the San Juan Mountain Range.

As you may already be aware, April 22 is Earth Day. Unlike many of the new Hallmark holidays we have each year, this one seems a bit appropriate. April signifies the changing of the seasons, from winter to spring; new life abounds everywhere you look; from the splashes of green as the grass begins to grow, to the new born calves and other livestock you can see in the fields on highway 550 between Ouray and Ridgway Colorado. Therefore, what better time to celebrate the planet we live on and its "Ouray" of wonderful gifts?
Be green, and earn some green. That’s the motto at Ouray’s Box Canyon Lodge and Hot Springs this Earth Day (April 22, 2011). Every guest who drives his or her electric/hybrid car to the lodging property on Earth Day stays for free that night. That means nearly $100 greenbacks in your pocket.

The Box Canyon Lodge strives to be a very green hotel. We look for ways to reduce our carbon footprint on the planet: we use geothermal hot springs to heat water for our rooms and guest use, we have insulated our buildings, replaced windows and doors with more energy efficient materials, and changed out our commercial washers and dryers for more energy efficient models. We recycled our older materials as much as possible to minimize impact to our local landfill. We continue to work on our impact. However, there are things that guests can do to help us in our quest to be green. Here are a few suggestions to help you be a greener guest during your next hotel stay:
