2012-2013 Ouray Ice Climbing Season is About to Begin!

Posted by Maria Ziemba on Wed, Dec 05, 2012 @06:34 PM

The Ouray Ice Park Prepares for the Best Year of Ice Climbing to Date!

December 15, 2012 is the projected opening day for the Ice Park this year, and, as always, we wait with baited breath as the ice farmers groom the canyon walls for a season of climbing in the spectacular Uncompahgre Gorge in Ouray, Colorado, home to one of the largest man-made ice parks in the world. Mother Nature at times plays with us a little, giving us these gorgeous 60*F days in early December, and creating concerns that perhaps there will not be enough ice to open on time, but the weatherman has promised a change in temperature, and snow by Christmas, so those of us at the Box Canyon Lodge at least anticipate a great season for climbers.

Museums of Ouray County

Posted by Maria Ziemba on Sat, Sep 08, 2012 @01:31 PM

Experience the Vibrant Past of the San Juans!

The history of Ouray County is resonant with all of the elements of a good western novel. Settled in the 1800's, Ouray is one of very few towns boasting such spectacular original Victorian Architecture undamaged by natural disaster, and maintained with so much love. Until the early 1960's, Ouray was the booming center of a huge mining community, filled with miners, saloons, churches, hotels, entertainment of many sorts, and its own hospital.

The town is named for Chief Ouray, of the Ute Indian Tribe, and also has the prestige of reaching a peaceful settlement with the Native Americans in the area. With such a rich and engaging history, it is no wonder there are such wonderful museums, celebrating Ouray County with contagious passion.

Ouray County History: Treasury Tunnel on Red Mountain Pass

Posted by Guest Blogger on Tue, Apr 26, 2011 @10:49 AM

As you travel highway 550 between Ironton and the summit of Red Mountain Pass along the Million Dollar Highway, you encounter three famous mining tunnels. Two of these, the Meldrum Tunnel and the Joker Tunnel, will be  discussed in future articles. However, the most famous of the three tunnels was the Treasury Tunnel. It is located near the top of Red Mountain Pass and today it is part of the Idarado Mine complex of more than 100 miles of tunnels between Red Mountain Pass and Telluride. The entrance to the Treasury Tunnel is behind the large metal door against the hillside across the highway from the Mining Overlook near the summit of Red Mountain Pass.

Posted by Guest Blogger on Sun, Apr 03, 2011 @09:43 AM

Thanks to visiting the Ouray area as frequently as possible on my Colorado vacations, I’ve stumbled upon my fair share of perfect picnic spots. Some are easy to reach; some not so much. I’d like to focus on the hidden, not-so-easy-to-find picnic spots of Ouray County. Some of these beautiful hideaways may take an hour or more to reach, but that’s the beauty of being in Ouray… you’re not in any hurry, are you?
